What's the oddest thing you've overheard traveling?

We go skiing every spring break at Taos, NM or Durango, CO. Sometimes we take our MH, sometimes stay on the mountain.

I was with my son and daughter waiting in line at a ski lift. The line wasn't too long but it wasn't a lift that was by the resort, it was on the "other side" of the mountain.

People were just kinda making small talk waiting for their turn. We overheard a kid, early teens maybe, say to an adult, maybe Dad, not sure, "I've got to go..." A couple of minutes later, "I've got to GO!" Then the next response from the adult...I know you're not supposed to laugh, and we held it together until we got on the lift. The adult said, "Just pee in your pants, what difference does it make anyway." What?

As a skier... just wow...

My most memorable vacation overheard comment was:

On a cruise, the folks next to us at dinner were discussing how they don't swim and really hate the water... You're on a cruise... island hopping.

At a rest stop in Montana, son and I were taking a break. Lrg tour bus pulled in with a Logo from a Canadian tour company on the side. Son and I were sitting on the hood of our car and a older couple got out of their MH and were walking by the bus. The bus door opened and many Asians...(they were from Japan) began leaving the bus. The son and I then heard the elderly woman ask her husband...."Are those...Canasians" ??? Took another 15 minutes to stop laughing before we could leave the rest area.

Living in Alaska, some things I've overheard at the airport:

- do they take American money here? (I know folks in NM have it even worse)

- I had forgotten the arrogance of folks from New York and Boston, because most people from the East are pretty nice. Then I overhear a guy on his cell, "I can't wait to get back on REAL time. I'm so tired of different time zone for these yahoos in the wilderness. Everybody I want to talk to is in Boston or New York."

- In Valdez, a tourist complains about everybody leaving their car running while they go in shopping at the store. No, we don't worry about theft when there is only 1 road out of town.

My grandson used to work at the large outlet mall next to I-5 at the Tulalip Indian Reservation. That's how he described most of his customers who were of Asian descent but lived in BC (Vancouver).

On a dive boat in the Caribbean when I reminded a young couple with brand new high end equipment that they had not turned their air on fully. " We only turn on the tank valve half way so if we run out of air we can turn on the other half tank."

Two things I've been asked while traveling in other states when I tell them where I'm from.

Georgia: I live in Nebraska. Nebraska ? Is that in the United States ?

Minnesota: I live in Nebraska. Nebraska ? do you live on a farm and have cows ? Does your city have tall buildings ? (we have a few above 20-30 stories...omaha)

I was in Alaska in 2016 at a nice little rv park and I asked the owner 'so what do you folks do around here in the winter?' He says we button this place up and go to Mesa Arizona which is what all the snowbirds do.

You’re assuming they got training?

Statements like that make them too stupid to learn.

Every dive operator I've used has checked that I had a certification card appropriate for what I was doing. Way too much liability not to check.

On our last visit to the Keukenhof Gardens, the worlds largest flower gardens with 80 acres and four pavilions we were setting in the reception area having a drink when we overheard a tour operator tell about 40 people in his group "ok,you have two hours and be back in this area so we can take a count".

This was our third visit over the years and you can't see everything in two days.

After the Solar Eclipse Rally in TN last summer, Cindy and I took a couple of days and went to Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg. At the west gate visitor center in GSMNP, a ranger asked if we were from the area, and we told her about FROG and the rally.

She swore this was true: A lady had stopped by the visitor center a couple of days earlier, absolutely livid. She wanted to know why they'd scheduled the total eclipse on a weekday, rather than on a Saturday when more people could have been off of work or school and could have had a better chance to see it. The ranger said she was do dumbfounded that she couldn't even think of a good response.

Here, ma'am, is a special sign made just for you.

Years ago, I read an article about the dumbest questions that NPS Rangers get from tourists. Having just read the article, I asked a ranger at Carlsbad Caverns about some of the dumbest questions he's gotten. His favorites were, "How thick are the walls?" and "What's in the unexplored sections of the cave?"

In the article, rangers were asked to vote on their favorite dumb question from those submitted. The winner was, "Why did they hold so many Civil War battles in National Parks?"
