Our Toy Hauler GVWR is 12190 and the pin box is rated at 15500. On our last Fifthwheel the pin box was also rated more than the gross. In my opinion you pin box is not correct.

I believe you are correct about the pin box. I will let the forum know what FR does to resolve my issue, once it is addressed.

Well, I have finally healed up enough from my hip replacement surgery to get the 39R12 out of storage and go camping! The sticker on my pin box clearly states "18,000 lb max, do not exceed." As we towed it almost 10,000 miles last year, we felt safe going 150 miles down to southern Indiana. When we get back next week, the dealer is going to hear about it, along with the rear awning, which went out, but won't go back in. Fortunately I had a power screwdriver and 7/16 driver to manually retract it.

GVWR is based on the lowest rated component on the camper.
There are many components rated higher; but there is a single component that is rated at the GVWR. What that component is, only the engineers know (could be the axles, frame, wall studding, ?).
Upgrading THAT component does not upgrade your GVWR since a new engineering study would be needed to determine what the "next domino" is.

FR replaced my 15,500 pin box because my GVWR is 15,825 lbs.

Totally agree. Forest River has had my hauler back at factory installing new pin box, since that was the limiting factor...according to their experts. I'll have a better update once they are done.

How do you know what weight your pin box is rated for?

When I took my pin box shroud/decorative cover, there was a sticker on it.
Otherwise, look for a model number on it and do a Google search for that number.

Look for a sticker on the top or side of the pin box.

I'll ask about this again today when I pick mine up from the dealer. But when I asked prior to purchasing, I was told that the pin box and axles were rated at 18k. And that the GVWR was 20k and change. It was explained to me that the pin weight is subtracted. But now that you guys have brought it up. I will ask again for an explanation.

This is accurate for the axles, but inaccurate for the pin box.
The axles carry the GVWR minus pin weight. The axles are often less than the camper's GVWR; in fact- most times, GVWR is calculated by adding the axle weight plus the pin weight.
But, the pin box has to carry the full GVWR. Anything less isn't appropriate and a new, higher capacity, pin box should be put on.

I'll agree with that. My three axles are rated 7,000 lb each, 21,000, as is the stated GVW. What I don't know is my actual pin weight when I'm fully loaded. The only weight I got on the CAT scale was 19,300 with the camper only on the scale. (Camper attached to truck) I'll certainly have to do the CAT scaling over again, with the re-weigh as outlined in another post.
The dealer can't take my camper in until the 18th, but in my phone conversation with the service manager, he stated that the pin box rating should be "at least 20,000."
Throwing more crap in the game, is the fact that my pin box was "damaged" when they moved it to the pad for my walk-thru in April of last year, which delayed my walk-thru and pick-up by a day.
I'll just have to wait until I take it down there next week to see what they are going to do or say about it.

X2
My GVW is 14500 lbs
My trailer axles are rated at 12,000 lbs (6,000 each 8 lug) the pin weight varies but is around 3,000 lbs so my set up is correct.
Not sure the exact rating of my pin box the trailer is not here.

Speaking with the dealer again when I picked up my 5'er. They again told me that the GVWR has the pin weight subtracted. Also told me that the 18k king pin was good to go. I plan on sending an email to the factory to confirm. I do feel that if the GVWR rating is just under 21k. Than my king pin should be rated for that.

That's interesting as with ours the king pin weight is part of the Gross weight

Oaklevel is kinder than I am- your dealer is full of bullsh...crap. I've NEVER heard that the pin weight is separate. If you want to know your camper's weight, you weigh the axles and add the pin weight.

Right, Nothing to do with the dealer.... Maybe I am being confusing?? The gross weight by sticker of our trailer is 14,500 lbs actual weight currently is 13,500 lbs. It has two 6,000 lb 8 lug axles. There is no good way to figure our pin weight as it varies. But I'm good.
Oh I think you mean riznfall ' s dealer..... ( I agree ) .....but dealers always tell the truth........

Yep, riznfall's dealer is pulling an Ace Ventura.
