2014 FR3 Lippert Steps Recall

Just received this from Good Sam's, looks like their finally going to do something about the Lippert Steps.

NHTSA Campaign ID: 15V798000 Manufacturer: Forest River, Inc. Model Year: 2014 Make: FOREST RIVER Model: FR3 Recall Date: 20151125 Component: EQUIPMENT:RECREATIONAL VEHICLE Potential # of Units Affected: 9687 Summary: Forest River, Inc. (Forest River) is recalling certain 2014 FR3, 2009 Forest River Encore, Sportscoach Elite, and Aurora, 2008-2009 Cruise Master, 2012-2015 Aviator, 2007-2014 Georgetown, 2007-2009 Legend, 2008-2012 Ridgeview, 2008-2014 Cross Country, 2010-2014 Coachmen Encounter, 2009-2014 Pathfinder, Solera, Mirada, Prism, and Pursuit motorhomes. The affected vehicles are equipped with certain Lippert-brand Coachstep Double and Triple Electric Steps. These steps use a bolt to attach the fan gear assembly to the steps. This bolt may fracture allowing the fan gear to disengage from the steps. As a result, the steps may not remain in the expected position and may be unstable. Consequence: Unstable entry and exit steps increase the risk of injury. Remedy: Forest River will notify owners and dealers will install a retainer bracket to reinforce the operating mechanism, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin on January 19, 2016. Owners may contact Forest River customer service number at 1-574-389-4600. Forest River''s number for this recall is 51-11102015-0109. Or owners can contact Lippert Components at 1-574-537-8900.

I had Lippert steps on my 2014 and the step shoulder bold snapped off prior to 2000 miles. I did some research and quickly found directly replacing the step bolt would not have fixed it. The dealer then suggested replacing the steps with. The same model. I convinced the dealer to replace the triple steps with Kwikee brand doubles. The Kwikee brand does not use the faulty design.

The design of the actuator used a shoulder bolt connected to a horizontally mounted gear connected to a double swivel control are that pushed the stairs out. The downward pressure place on the step put excessive stress on the shoulder bolts and they broke.

Although I'm happy to see he recall notice now, I'm disturbed that the recall is only offering to add a bracket. Knowing the design I can't see how a bracket will fix the issue for any long term use.

I am. A good Sam member. How does one get copied on these recall notices? I'm waiting to see how long it will take for them to recall the door entry lock!

The Lippert steps on my 2014 broke twice. The first time was under warranty, and were replaced with the same Lippert steps. The second time, out of warranty, however, I contacted FR, and they agreed to replace the steps with Kwikee steps, under warranty. So far, so good.

As for the GoodSam, go to their website, you have to be registered, then under Benefits, click Sam Alert. You input your vehicles (auto also), and you'll get emailed when there is a recall. Good Luck.

Kudos to Forest River for sending me a notice of recall on a planned repair for the Lippert steps this week. The FR notice does not offer a solution yet as parts are not available, but I was encouraged that they notified me as my coach was purchased used one year old from a Campers Inn dealer and did not suspect they would know who I was.

I had taken suggestions here to list my MH for notifications on the Good Sam site. Alas I already had my steps fixed. But again I'm glad to see FR is acting in good faith with such notifications.

I thought I read that if you have your receipts, FR will reimburse you if you already made the repairs,
