Welcome to the forum its a great place to get your questions answered. I don't have a good answer but would suspect contacting a local cabinet company and get their ideas, someone on the forum will have done this and will chime in.

Why would you want to put paper back on for a repeat performance? A friend of mine just painted his cabinets, looks very nice.

You can buy peel and stick wood veneer and use it to recover the cabinets. I always put an extra coat of glue on before applying it. You would have to stain it then apply a polyurethane finish. It would be a lot of work. I have used it on several cabinetry projects and it works well. Your cabinets will look much nicer than they ever did. Good luck.
