Camping World Wins Auction for Gander Mountain

What this means to an RV'er I cannot say. I am just wondering about the CW sentiment that other members have expressed. There have been a lot of negative comments about CW.

There goes another business down the drain (even though it was headed there) due to poor customer support. I won't shop there again.

The Gander Mtn store near us opened about a year ago as the anchor store for a new shopping area....already going out of business.

Just saw news today that Gander Mountain will close all locations nationwide. According to the article, effective immediately, all sales at Gander Mountain are final. There are no refunds, no exchanges or adjustments for prior purchases and inventory is limited to stock on hand.
Gift cards will only be accepted until May 18.
Sad...

Guess we'll have to wait and see.

I wonder what they'll be selling. Are they opening supply stores because they won't have much room to sell campers at the Peoria location.

CW is the worst. They gobble up good Mom and Pop RV stores and destroy them.

I'm always armed. Nothing new there.... Never bought zip at Gander Mountain anyway.

Besides, now it's Bass-Belas, or Probeleas or some such.

I am no fan of Camping World in any sense off the word, but Gander Mountain brought on their demise all by themselves. My company built their western PA stores. The upper management was totally incompetent. Bad management, limited selection when it came to outdoor equipment, and high prices seldom result in long term success, especially with where web shopping went to over the years. To top it off their internet business model and website sucked.

They were more interested in selling high margin clothing to people who wanted the outdoor look, than outdoor sport related equipment to people who actually do the outdoor thing despite attempting to come across as that was the main focus . They tried to compete with Cabelas and Bass Pro by doing it half assed.

Empire Marcus picked up a bargain as a lot of those stores were in prime locations and a lot of the real estate was leased, so he'll close them out and the lessors will get a screwing. He'll then throw up some more Camping Worlds in the prime locations and sell off the remainder of the owned real estate. That's a good thing. Let them get even bigger. That will be more cards to fall when the economy takes a dip or gas prices spike, and the RV and camping related industries go down the poopshoot.

Gander had lots of stuff...clothes, guns, ammo, knives, fishing stuff, nick-nacks, shoes and tent/camping stuff...they are just too high. I bet I didn't buy 2 things not on sale or clearance.

We have Mountain Equipment Co-Op opening in a few weeks and SAIL in Canada . Both seem to be great stores and have good stock. There is a Pro Bass shop somewhere north of Toronto with no assault rifles or handguns.

Ugh. Not sure how long cw will be in business either.

Their prices are all over the place. I was at the Spartanburg store and almost bought a Sewer Solution there along with a cartload of other stuff, until I realized that the sewer solution was available for less than half what cw was asking on Amazon.
The whole cartfull went back on the shelf and I didn't spend a dime.

We have a GM here in Evansville. Now there are reports Lemonis may keep 70 to 75 stores may stay open, including our local GM.

Don't quite understand why the CEO of CW bought GM. There are too many players in the market now. You can only slice a pie so small and there is no filling left.

Read in a local paper that CW is going to keep 17 GM stores open and the one in Marion, IL is one of the 17. The GM in Marion sits along the interstate and I wonder if it won't be some type of CW satellite store.

X2 - what Tim said.

We had a Gander Mtn here in HSV, and every other sports store in town beat their prices by a country mile. And their gun prices? OMG most of the time almost twice the price on most gun dealers in town.

Camping world it turning into the Borg - not sure what the RV sales industry is going to look like in 5 years
