Which Pop Up Gizmos

Standard, High Wind, or Super High Wind

Is it really as simple as what conditions we'll be camping in our are there other subtle differences between these three options?

There are some differences and it does sort of come down to what area you camp in.
The high wind comes with clips to clip the sides of the pug to the tenting, the super high wind comes with additional tie downs attached.
I do not consider myself camping in wind prone areas (midatlantic) but I have the high wind version and wish I had the super high wind. Have had some issues with the wind lifting the pugs and the clips popping off setting the pugs to flapping so bad we have taken them off for the duration of the storm (not fun in the middle of the night, I also think the clips provided with my set are undersized). I added additional tie downs with grommets and parachute cord. Not ideal but works for now. My next set will be super high wind.

Get the Super High Wind. I have had each, and I wish I had just gotten the SHW first.

I bought the SHW version and I also bought a pile of these from The Home Depot. $20 will get you 40 of them and you’ll find lots of uses for them. Click image for larger version

I only use these clips if there is wind or storms coming. They tend to cause premature wear on the ends of the PUG. Once you get them in the mail, remind me, and I'll post up a pic of how I loop the cords for a good fit and install velcro for a more quasi-permanent installation.

I have the gizmos and use these clips. They are the same size as the ones that come with the gizmos only stronger. I use them over the piping on the tent ends mostly to secure it on one end while I pull it over to the other side. Haven’t noticed any premature wear, but I’ve also only used them 4 or 5 times so far. I don’t attach it with the Velcro as I don’t want to carry s ladder tall enough or climb on top of the bunk end. These are strong enough to keep the gizmo from sliding down the backend. I only use a 3 step stepladder to instill them.

No need for a ladder, just open the emergency exit window in the tent end and stand on the bed to attach the velcro. We don't even take them off between trips, just fold up the tent ends with the gizmos attached by the Velcro.

You have no issues with leaving them attached and folded up inside? They don’t create bulk that could potentially cause leaks while sitting closed up? Do you store your unit outdoors in between use?

No issue with leaving them on. They have almost no bulk to them. No leaks when stored. Be sure they are not caught in the seals (same as tenting). Camper is tored outside always, uncovered.

Great thanks! I’m going to give it a try. I was under the impression that you climb on the bunkend to put them on and off everytime you set up
Thanks for the tip!

What a great idea. I feel like a complete moron for always using a step ladder to attach them. My next set will be the shw with Velcro.

You'll be pleased getting the high and super high wind versions. Permanently attached bungees to secure with, better insulation and reflective quality. Super High Wind doesn't mean you won't hear the wind, they're just sturdier. I like them.

We just bought and are currently using the SHW version. Although a little pricey (and I had to get a 3rd gizmo for our extra bed) they are doing a nice job. We’re at the Jersey shore and it’s quite windy here. I’m glad I got them. Excellent customer s can we indicsted on the forum.

I really like the SHW version I have on mine. We velcro'd the PUG in place once and it gets folded up with the bed. When we get to camp, I drop the bed, get the bungees under the bunk and clip them together. Done. During teardown, I unclip them shake off any debris, flip the cords over the bunk and fold it up.

We were in a windy spot a few times and you can't hear them flapping at all.

We had the high wind previously on our popup. They were great at the time but the clips would release on a good gust and they would keep you awake at night rattling.

Also, due to the height of the Roo, I wouldn't be able to reach the upper clips if we had gone that route.

We only have one bunk on our 23BDS but the extra cost was worth it after just a trip or two due to ease of setup and noise in a beach/windy environment.

The more you spend the better they fit.
I bought the High Wind version. The clips are fine up until around 30-35 mph then some of them might come loose.
PUGs help, but hybrids are miserable in hot weather. I sold mine and went back to a TT.

What kind of Velcro did you use?

I used the Velcro Industrial Strength tape. I think it was the 1" x 10' roll. The loop part comes already attached on the PUG SHW so you only use the hook part and attach it to the trailer on/under the curved black flange.

Have you found the canvas wet underneath? That has been my reservation about doing the velcro at the top. They aren't waterproof. I have had one instance on take down day where it was still wet in a few places. But it would be more convenient to leave them in place.

i have not found the canvas wet underneath - the way the velcro is attached to the inside panel and the way the pugs attach to it, it is hard for water to get in there.
