Wine anyone?

During my pursuit to maximize my Roo 233s storage, I realized a nice nook above my refrigerator. After carefully removing the front panel I found it was was well vented in the back of the fridge up thru the roof, and a whole bunch of nothing toward the front. After checking the temp while the fridge running, the temp was unaffected and ready for storage. I'm sure it is not everyone's taste, but my wife and I really enjoy wine, and finding good wineries on our camping adventures. New storage possibilities = wine storage for my wine-loving wife. Perfect Mothers Day surprise. Of course I had to pimp it out and add multi-colored LEDs. Who said camping can't be "fisticated"? Not me :-) What do you think?

BTW, I did add extra insulation above the fridge, just in case. Click image for larger version

I am totally loving this!! Bookmarking for DH to see because we have been wondering what was in that space. Just too scared to pull off that panel and see. I enjoy wine, too so this is right up my alley. Thanks for sharing your idea!!

Now I must ask....where did you find the inserts to hold the wine. What about the storage lid...what is it made of? Did you do the etching yourself? I am LOVING this!!! Altho we don't have the same type of camper, I am hoping this would work on ours, too!

I made the box and wine cutouts myself, all wood. Found the LEDs on Amazon. The door is 3/8" Lexan that I cut out scraps from my work and an rounded the corners. The "etchings" are decals I found online. I special ordered the size for a whopping 11 bucks. Total project cost about $45. My wife's excitement...priceless!!

I can only imagine how excited she was. This is a fantastic project and I am almost tempted (ALMOST) to wake DH up and make him look at these pics. Think I'll wait until tomorrow--he may be more receptive to another "honey do" project then...lol. I am so excited about this... I hope that some day soon I'll be posting pics of our version of this and giving thanks to you~~

Scootinggranny, it's not a difficult project, especially if your DH is handy. I'll post a few mor pics of the build.

Picture of the opening, I added styrofoam insulation on top of the fridge before mounting the box. About 16" deep of nothing before the insulation to the vented area.

The box is all plywood and pretty snug to the opening. Installed the LEDs and added the top.

After I mounted the box, I trimmed it out so you don't see the plywood edges or the LEDs.

Wow. I was noticing that space above the fridge and wondering if I could add storage. I love your ideas and am going to shamelessly steal. I especially love the blue led light that will match the fridge lighting so well. Only difference will be that I am the handy one (wife) so I will be doing the mod.

My heart missed a beat when I saw this and thought it was a proper wine cooler. I had never seen on that size and shape before. I was ready to pop up my camper and take measurements. lol.

But now I understand it is a wine storage area. Very nice looking nonetheless and it fits the area perfectly. LED's are an awesome touch as well.

Vin.

Space in an RV is at a premium. That, my friend, may be the best use of storage space I have seen.

karrun, I had hoped I could fish the electrical cord down the side of the fridge, then pop it out to an electrical outlet that was already there. But there is a wood barrier/divider under my fridge and above the electric breaker box. So...I ended up popping a hole higher up and ran an electric cord down to the outlet. Not as clean as I wanted, but it works. At least when the bunk curtains are pulled back, you can't see the cord running up the wall!
