Fort Leonard Wood camp Ground

The camp ground at Fort Leonard Wood Missouri is disgraceful. It has no facilities and it is not keep up at all. Just a big circle like dirt road with a few dirt spots to camp. The command does not care about the retired veterans or the troops on the facility as far as camping goes.

AHH GEEE! The last time I camped there (45 years ago), all I had was a shelter half and a back pack.

One of the reasons seasoned vets pronounce Ft Leonard Word, MO...

Ft Leonard Wood, MISERY

Then again US Military Campgrounds posts this review:

This is a very rustic and primitive area to park an RV along the Big Piney River about 5 miles from the main post. This camping area is located on post. Campers may use this area without reservations, fees, or check-in. There is room for tents and RV's to dry-camp.

(Best bet in the area is Lake of the Ozarks - or if you must FamCamp, McConnell, KS or Scott AFB, IL)

Concur, however, FLW does sponsor a really nice facility 55 miles northwest (off post) of Ft Lost-In-The-Woods called Lake of the Ozarks Recreation Area. It's a 360 acre reserve open all year with 29 concrete sites (FHU) and nice facilities, if you don't mind a short drive.

You can address questions/complaints about any Army Recreational Facility to: Commanding General, Installation Management Command, Joint Base San Antonio, TX. Be clear and consise as to the problem, date, who you talked to, a d your recommendation to fix the shortcomings.

Only did an overnighter here but checked out the facility before hitting the road. Very nice, defiantly would like to return for a few days

I was planning a trip there to show my wife where I took basic training and MOS training, but that was in 1968, would like to see the improvements on post, being I remember only nasty red clay only...God Bless our Troops and Vets... One minute ago this flag was in the first row now it's in the second, how does this happen?....

It sounds like a good idea for a place to stop on my trip back home. I spend winter of 70-71 there and would be fantastic to show the wife where did my basic & combat engineering training.

They have moved the Military Police and Chemical school to FLW.

Elind, did the same there in 1968 a few years before you, how did you like that red clay? what CBE unit where you assigned to and where were you stationed, were you drafted? I think they still had the draft then, how time slips away...

I have stayed at the Lake of the Ozarks annex- the spots fill quickly for reservations. It is on a quieter arm of the lake but it can be busy on the weekends. They have a small camp store and they do rent watercraft for those that enjoy that type of recreation.

I had a draft number 24 when 180 was getting drafted. So I joined the 107th Combat Engineering Co. of the Michigan National Guard in Baraga, Mi. to keep myself out of Vietnam.
It was cold, but didn't remember the clay cause everything was frozen.

There is an I-Phone app "C-RV military " that shows most places that have RV camping. Most have prices, pictures, descriptions.
The android might have one similar.
