Question for you Navy guys - didn't the Navy fly a military version of the civil Grumman G-1 and if so,what was the Navy designation of it?

Do not know about G-1, however they did use G-4s and called it a C-40. If my memory serves me correct.

Curious so I Goggled it. The Navy designation for the G- 1 was TC-4. It was used for bombardier/navigator training for the A-6 Intruder.

That's right B47, they fashioned an A-6 nose to it and looked like Jimmy Durante! I worked on those and A-6's at Whidbey Island, WA. I know, I'm an USAF guy but my civilian career I worked for DON Depot. I worked on EA-6A, EA-6B, P-3, S-3, F-18, and just about all the helos too.
