I spent my short 4 years in the Navy Squadron WV2 based in Barbers Point, Hawaii flying over 5000 hours between Midway Island (wonderful snorkeling between missions) and Adak Alaska (landed once short one engine). Timeline... 1 1/2 years electronics & radar schools, 1 1/2 years flying, 1 year teaching new techs to do my flying job (side job, Chief Engineer radio station KNDi, Waikiki). Post USN... Used my Navy training to work my way through St Pete JC and USF, Tampa to a MSEE, about 50 years ago. Now I travel for fun and enlightenment. Capt Gene comes from USCG Masters License, years of teaching sailing on SFO bay followed by 14 years of Caribbean cruising in our 2 Catamarans.

Midway was a great little place. I spent a couple of weeks there back in 1984. We had missions there up until around '89 or '90 or so. The goonie birds were so much fun to watch, especially the young ones that were learning how to take off and fly. And of course any of them coming in for a landing. A lot of cheap entertainment.

Not always cheap... We took a gooney bird hit on our upper radome during take off... Our flight engineer was half way into the radome when it blew off taking the radar and our center vertical stabilizer!! Thank GOD for good pilots, we made it back to midway, and the flight engineer dropped back in to the aircraft when it started to tear off. I have seen a gooney get drunk on beer and try to fly...

I've been to Midway twice. Once when the gooney birds covered every square yard of the island and once when they were all gone. We took a hit to our #3 engine on our takeoff roll. This was right before V1, so the pilots rejected the takeoff and shut down the engine. The FE pulled out what was left of the bird and the fire dept used a fire hose to flush out whatever made it past the engine inlet (C-130 Allison T56-A-15). Then we rotated the prop a few inches at a time for one revolution, while the FE inspected the turbine blades. Once that was done we tried again, and made it off the ground without incidence.

Same here. Enlisted on my 17th birthday. Graduated from PI 2 days before my 18th.
Sadly, on my 18th birthday they bombed Beirut. Never felt like celebrating my birthday ever since.
