Shellback here. USS Pyro AE-24 Ammo ship.
1973 Westpac 10 month cruise and crossed after visiting Singapore. My buddy lost his wedding ring crawling through the 30 foot long slop/puke chute. He wouldn't even look for it at the end of the day.
I was a machinist mate.

Emerald Shell Back crossed at 0,0 in 97 on the USS Kearsarge. It was an interesting day to say the least.

My first time was on Connie in 2003 with VAQ-131! Second time on USS Nimitz. Rode Nimitz through the ditch that cruise. Came within a few miles of making Bluenose on USS Rhode Island but they wouldn't let us cross.

Same here. All my equator crossings were between 22,000 and 25,000 feet.

I wonder if they still do the old rituals. Everything has gotten so disgustingly PC.

I think we crossed on the same cruise. USS America (CV-66). Swim call was cancelled due to sea snakes.

pollywog

Not many pollywogs responding. There's a certain cachet to being a shellback.

I thought I was going to be a shellback but just three weeks before the tin can I was on left for a Red Sea cruise (via Recife, Capetown, and the Cape of Good Hope) I was transferred to another tin can that was returning from a long - long - deployment to Antarctica as part of Operation Deep Freeze. This was 1968. I never made is much south of about 15°N in the Caribbean.

When I reported for duty on the new ship, the personnelman was frazzled. So many were being separated and so many replacements coming aboard that he was practically pulling his hair out trying to keep up.
