Shell back

Shell Back or Pollywog?
If you are a shell back you know what that question means. I got mine aboard the USS Essex CVA-9 when we crossed in 1958 south of Celon on our way to Capetown S.A.
There are probably quite few shell backs on here , but I'm kind of unique since I'm a retired USAF Msgt. .

I'm a double shell back. Crossed over on the USS John C Stennis (CVN-74) in 1998 and then again in 2001. Good times. They really made us go through hell to earn it.

Shell back

Blue nose was hell as well. But after being in a sub for 6 months it did break up the monotony. Think I still have a photo around somewhere after the Prussian blue, flour, and taking the truth serum (yuck) [emoji23]

Missed the equator that they did after I transferred or would have had both.

Pollywog Spent my short time building USS Nimitz CVN68. Only sea time was REPTRA and Shakedown. After shakedown we went to N.Atlantic. I left in Nov 75.

Shellback USS California CGN-36 off the west coast of Africa 1980. We were headed around the horn to the Indian Ocean from a Med cruise for the Iranian hostage situation. On that cruise we crossed the equator 6 times. We only did the initiation the first time. The first time almost all the crew were wogs. Not many east coast home ported ships get the chance to cross the equator.
