Submarine Veterans

1984-2004

USS OHIO SSBN 726 GOLD CREW
USS BALTIMORE SSN 704
USS PITTSBURG SSN 720
USS SPRINGFIELD SSN 761

Started out as a ''striker" aboard Ohio, became an FTG, Fire Control Technician Guns, until the Navy took away the Guns. Retired as Chief Fire Control Technician.

Anyone that was on a submarine and an FT was in Groton for A or C schools. I was there for shore duty as instructor.

It was nice to see you escaped Groton. I could not get away from there until I retired. The FT detailer kept telling me I could choose something, sea or shore duty in Groton. I still have those guys on my people to target list. Thanks to you for all you did.

I was in FTG school Groton - Mark 18 Angle Solver in spring of '68 and the start of my 6 year commitment. Sub school followed and then received orders to SS-324 (Diesel) in Groton. I so much wanted a Nuclear Sub. After 3 months aboard I surfaced /submerged numbers of times for training of midshipmen, I experienced (emergency) "blow negative" tanks twice, rode out a hurricane above surface including a "Collision" alert, hot bunked, never showered aboard, never worked on my equipment, never was informed about working on my Dolphins, I only mess cooked. I love the crew but when I confronted the XO about leaving he didn't blame me for wanting off. My wanting a Navy career was over and I spent the rest of my time aboard a Cruiser working on Talos radar for 2 years (but FTG's were more critical) then switched to working on 5" 38 Guns. I was so pleased to be Honorably discharged as a FTG3 with a good conduct award, Thank God !
