We were under way in USS America (CV-66) for more than 60 days, which apparently entitled us to a beer. So we had a beach party on the flight deck and we each got 2 chits for beer. Best beer I ever had.

Waaattt. I didn’t know C-rats ever expired!
Some of the best we got were noted to have come from recovered staples from Custer’s First Stand. 😂

There are as many versions of SOS as there were cooks in the service. The recipe up top was close to what I remember during my 68/71 tour. After VN, the cooks at Fort Monroe, Va made it only on payday mornings, you can bet your ass that I was up early on pay day & right there when the mess hall opened. I could live on that ****. Two pieces of toast, buttered, Two scoops of SOS & two over medium floating on top. When the warden asks what do you want for your final meal, don't be surprised if I ask for SOS. The main thing was the cooks worked with what they had on hand, ground beef, if they had refrigeration , dried "chipped-beef" if cooking in the field.

I like SPAM fried with a little mustard and sweet onion. I might try making SPAM gravy when I get a chance.
C-Rations were being phased out when I went in, but I ate my share. The original MREs were pretty bad, the new ones aren't to bad. I keep some around for emergencies. But are getting pricey.

True story:
My grandfather fought in France in WWI and was a front line 'cook' (with a rifle).
When I was younger he made this (hamburger gravy) all the time and we kids loved it.
The two things he said was that it was really not the same over fresh bread, his memories were of HardTack or Hard Crust loaves. ...... and the use of Mule meat..... (with maggots)...
His point was that you eat what is in front of you and be glad for what you have, as it could be much worse and is for many others.

Nope I had them in Vietnam in 1968 and 1969. The cis were a little on the dried out side.

The c's were still around in 71-72 during my tour sometimes you'd come across the lrps. Better than the mess hall... at least it didn't taste like fuel from the mess stoves.

C rats were still around in 75 and 76 as I had them at that time also. Not very tasty but if you were in a situation where they were called for, you were more concerned about getting some nourishment than you were about your palette
