now i'm wondering what is required to use such a facility?

Hello,
A lot of it depends on the rules of the individualor camp grounds. "Active or retired military/dependant, or Active government civilan employee. " actually describes the pecking order for making reservations, for some sites they also allow civilans if sites are available. A great place to go for Military camping is U.S. Military Campgrounds and RV Parks the site is 'operated by a private citizen, proudly retired from the U.S. Air Force'.
I have used it several times to finds sites in the Midwest to stay at.

I am very familiar with military Famcamps and use them all the time. Rates have gone up, but full hookups run 20-25 dollars a night. Some take reservations; some don't. If you can dry camp. Many terrific Famcamps will not turn you away and let you dry camp until a hookup spot becomes available. Dry camping runs 10-12 dollars a night at most Famcamps. Again, military only with some exceptions.
My son is working with Larry (the owner of the site U.S. Military Campgrounds and RV Parks ) to write an App for the iPhone and iPad at my request. I hope they will have it ready before this Spring camping season. There are several "hoops" to jump though (The software has an annual subscription and Apple gets a cut) so here's hoping.

I am retired Army and have used them a lot this year and all that I camped at were reasonable in price, and I can use PX and commissary for thoses services. Medical services also. You need A ID card to get on base etc. Good luck.

I work on Fort Bragg and their campground and I think all Army campgrounds are for active or retired military, dependents and federal employees. It is outside the perimeter of the post so access is not a problem. If you want to camp there, send me a private message and I can see if I can get you a site.

So, can you use US military campsites if you're Canadian military?

Thank you to all of you who have served. I know, I am in good company now. I served in Viet Nam from 1966-1969 in the Marines. Got out, could not get a job, then went into the Army. Served 8 more years then was medically retired.
To me, going to stay at military CG is like visiting family.

I was in the Navy 1964 - 1968...Was medical discharged but very seldom used any retired benefits until I retired for good last year.
In our first 3 week trip we used Famcamps at Scott AFB, IL., Memphis Naval Air Station , and Tinker AFB, in Oklahoma City.Great campgrounds all...and VERY reasonable prices.

It depends on the Military facility. Some campgrounds allow retired Department of Defense (DOD), Department of the Army (DAC) to stay. It mostly depends on the size of the facility. I am a retired DAC and stay at Military campgrounds regulary.

Or their guests. I camped recently at a nice military campground at Ft. Fisher, NC, with a retired Army officer. I arrived first, but they wouldn't let me set up (can't blame them) until they called Major Tom to make sure he was on the way to camp with us. Then they went ahead and gave us our site, which was right next to his. Everyone was very friendly, and the campground is located right between the Cape Fear River and the Atlantic Ocean. Great spot. Near Kure Beach and Carolina Beach. They also have cottages that can be rented by military people and their guests.

There used to be a campground at Selfridge a couple miles from my house. My parents stayed there a while. My mom was working on base though, she was a civilian. My dad is a vet but I think they let them stay because of my mom working there at the time.
