It was a sad time. Not as sad as these days.

STG3 - Sonar Technician, Surface, 3rd Class Petty Officer.

Aboard the USS Deyo, DD989 which is now a reef in the Atlantic. The sonar system used in the movie Hunt For Red October is basically the same system I operated. Oh, and I did [passively] track a Soviet sub from about 120 miles away as it exited the Med and travel northward.
  • Did two cruises to the Persian Gulf...boooooring!
  • The oceans are full of whales farting
  • Played war games against our own submarines and, yeah, they are badass. There's a reason why they say, "There are subs and there are targets."

US Army, 13A by trade. Spent a lot of time post-KD jobs working in Ops, Logistics, Education, and eventually G1/J1 and JOC Operations.

I did 1995-2018. The kids today are alright

Oh c'mon man. You can't leave us hanging like that! I've never see a tank quite like that. I can figure some of it out, but can you explain what this is, and where it was used? Quite an interesting tank!

That is a CEV (Combat Engineer Vehicle). It's a modified M60 tank with a 165mm cannon (primarily used for destruction) and a hydraulic dozer blade and A frame. Armaments were a 7.62mm coaxial machine gun and a .50 caliber machine gun in the commander's cupola.

It has a 4 man crew (driver, loader, gunner, and commander).

Pretty much relegated to gate guard duties by the time I came in, in the mid 90’s. I saw a few around, kind of like seeing the last 8-inch SP howitzers. Most of the engineer stuff I grew up around as a IN (M) FSO were ACEs/AVLMs. Always fun to see the Engineers fire live MICLICs at the breach.

God bless all those KIA and horribly wounded, and their survivors, both family and pals on this Memorial Day weekend. Still getting up at dawn tomorrow to lower the colors. Really annoying to me how everywhere I look I see flags at half mast all the time and don't even know why. Today's culture has rendered it a very shallow gesture, lowering it for every damn reason under the sun anymore. We, the 1% of Americans who served still get it though.
