Before we had our first child 2 years ago, my wife and I were heavily into
motorcycles. We gave up the road bikes for camping after my son was born to
spend some more time in the places we've ridden past in a blur.
My first real motorcycle was a 2002 Honda GL1800. I put 120,000 miles on it
in 4 years. Living in Minnesota with a short riding season, that's quite a bit.
We did a lot of Ironbutt rides and rallys which helped turn the odometer
quickly. That bike had been to 40 states. This picture shows the 4gallon fuel
cell I used on long distance events which increased my range to 450miles. I've
literally lived on it for 7 days straight putting on 7300miles during the Buttlite
IIII.
In 2006 I "downsized" to an BMWR1200RT. More fun and actually more
comfortable than the goldwing. My wife and another riding friend switched
after giving it a test drive. Made carrying spare parts easy. You have your
share of on the road repairs riding as much as we did.
We have kept our dual sport Suzuki DR650s. It wont be long until the little
guy is on his own dirt bike and they don't take up much garage space. Plus I
can still ride when I get the itch.
