Ball hitch size

Will a 2" ball work okay on a receiver that had a 2 5/16" on before?

I'm not sure what you're asking. You can't pull a trailer with a 2" ball when the trailer requires a 2 5/16" ball. But you can switch the balls on the receiver/ shank to pull a different trailer.

You can take a 2 5/16" ball off a receiver and put a 2" ball on it in its place "yes" if the shank size is the same.
So if the 2 5/16" ball has a 1" shank and the 2" ball has a 3/4" shank then "no"
"If that's what your asking"

If you have an occasional need for the 2 5/16 ball, maybe just purchase a new ball mount and 2 inch ball. You might discover that it only costs a little more to buy the mount with the ball on it than it does to buy just the ball.

Its a lot easier to swap the dropdown mount than it is to swap balls.

It won't do MACH 2, but I can get a sandwich and take a pee.

Reese 2 inch reciever (i jsut purchased a drop down unit) was 29.99$ Canadian. the ball was 15$ Canadian.
if your trying to use a 2 inch ball in a 2 5/16's reciever - it will not hold onto the truck for very long - if at all.
