Bumper plugs

Any advice how to keep the 4 inch square bumpers in place? Tired of replacing them and losing my hoses on the highway.

I saw an article in Trailer Life about that. Drill about a 1/4" hole on both sides of the bumper and both ends.Run a 12" zip tie through the holes and wrap around the cap and snap together. This will require a new zip tie each time you have to access the hose, but they are relatively cheap.

I have two sewer caps that can be attached to the bumper by screws and have a hinged door that opens. Bought them at camping world.

Velcro strips have been on mine for 3rd summer without trouble. I tied a string around the end of the hose to grab and pull out the hose. Good luck !

I lost one of the locking bumper plugs on the first trip out. With the plug installed, I drilled a hole thru the top and bottom of the bumper, making sure to drill thru the plug, and dropped a 5" threaded bolt thru and put a wing nut on the bottom. Since I store a collapsible ladder in there, I wanted to make sure it could not get out.

You can also drill and then use the clips like you use on your load leveler springs the spring clips and then put them in the hole.

Are ya'll having them fall out while on the road or losing due to forgetting to put them back in?
I was thinking about drilling a hole thru the corner diagonally and putting a pin in it myself.

I made a retaining pin using a Heliarc welding rod, bent into the shape below.



Drilled a hole through the bumper and cap.



Worked great.

I just don't like putting the hose back in the bumper "wet" so I generally toss the washed out hose into the pickup bed. The hose gets proper storage once we get home or to the next stop. We camp mostly in state parks so the hose usually gets used only at dump stations.

The problem is, I leave the bumper plug sitting on top of the bumper. If I could just remember to put the stupid plug back in the bumper then I'd be alright.

Radio is right.

Don't store your sewer hose in the bumper. The vibration from the trailer movement will wear down the plastic coating on the outside of the hose.

Mount one or two of these E-Z Hose Carrier under your trailer, or where ever. Cap closes securely and is vented for evaporation.

gregm59 , what brand of ladder do you have that fits in the bumper. That would make it handy to take with you in case you needed a ladder

Here is the link. This one is one sided and if I bought another one, I'd get the step ladder version. It's great to get up high enough to brush off the slide and it's even useful around the house. It's quite sturdy. I got it on sale for around $50.

I go to Wally World and buy a small picture hanging chain cut it put one end on the bumper with a screw and the other end fastened to the cover.
It looks real good. .

I like the retaining clip made out of the welding rod. Its simple and easy to reproduce. I have access to welding rod and will make a couple of them up. I like the E-Z-Hose Carrier. I've seen pumping contractors with PVC pipe with threaded end caps, I'm going to look at some pumping supplies and see if I can make one for less money.

Just installed this & it works great.

I also bought a set of hinged bumper plugs & installed those (they run like $4.00), so I can now store my fishing rods in the bumper.

In addition to the easier access from the covers, the mounting hardware prevents them from coming out.

I cut out two 4x4 inch squares of 1/8" plate steel, I then took a holesaw and cut 1.25" holes in the squares for ventilation. I welded a heavy hinge to each square plate end cap. I welded the hinge to the bumper lining up the squares with the bumper ends. I then welded a tab inside the bumber. I cut a slot in the end cap door to mate up with the tab. I then keep them closed with a hitch pin. In the left side of the bumper I welded in a stop so the poop tube can't migrate to the other side of the bumper. The right side I didn't use a hitch pin, I used a cotter pin and bent it up tight. No reason to open that one really.

It turned out awesome and as strange as it sounds I get lots of compliments. Sorry I didn't take any pictures at this time.

Get a small diameter tent spike and drill a hole through the top and bottom of the bumper and plug. Slide the tent spike through the bumper and plug and it's fixed. The tent spike is smaller than a 1/4 inch and has a turn at the top that rests on the top of the bumper.

Actually you can get reusable wire tires from NAPA.
