PA requires a “non commercial” class A license for a combination where the towed vehicle is over 10000 and the combined weight is over 26001. Anyone else have one of these???

Do they make a distinction between commercial and non-commercial??

As long as your combined gvw is under 26001 lbs a class C is adequate in PA to my knowledge. What are the gvw's of your truck and trailer?

Truck GVWR IS 11500. RV GVWR is 16000+. I’m close to 28000 combined GVWR which puts me in Class A non-commercial territory.

Virginia requires a standard drivers licence for non commercial towing no classes.

That's definitely class A territory. I reread the PADMV license classes and your original thought of towing anything over 10,000 gvwr does seem to constitute class A.

Yep need a class a. It is the same test as for a cdl class a. The problem is finding the correct dmv center that can do the class a test. Last person I heard trying to get one on here had to make many phone calls before he found a dmv that even new there was a class a... Then even longer trying to find a place that does them. For the test you'll also need someone with a class a or class a cdl to bring you to the test.

I have gone thru this in Illinois and the Classes show in dbarr messages are only for commercial CDL type driver licenses. I know this to be a fact because when I moved here I tried to secure a Class A non CDL license. The secretary of state office in Springfield il said there is no such thing in Illinois as a Class A non CDL license. So I was going to secure a CDL but the secretary of state said that for a personal use RV all that was required was a normal drivers license and that is a Class D. I have been driving my F350 and fifth wheel in Illinois now for many years with a normal drivers license.

Finding someone I know with a class A will be the hardest part. There are a bunch of local trucking companies here. Might be able to pinch somewhere there...

Yes I can imagine so. It can be a class a or cdl class a person. No class b folks.

I have a Class B Non Commercial drivers license. I obtained the license when I had a motorhome. It is not hard to obtain. You need to study the PA CDL learners manual. Any PA DMV driver license and photo center can administer the test. You should call the center to make sure an officer will be available to administer the test. You will need to have the vehicle or vehicles (truck and trailer) for the road test. You also need to have a licensed driver with an equal or greater license than the license you are seeking. The examining officer checked his drivers license before he did anything with me. I did not need to take a written test only the road test. I was asked several questions about the vehicle such as air brakes and this led to more questions. If you study the CDL learners manual, you will have no problems. The road test was a piece of cake. A Tip -- make sure you do not have a tire hit a curb. That is a sure way to fail the test.


I highly recommend the appropriate class drivers license for the vehicle(s) you operate. If you are involved in an accident, your insurance company may require it. I notified my insurance company when I obtained my class B license. They thanked me when I did.

Don't bet that all dmvs can do the cdl test.. They cannot around here.

If you are stopped as well the insurance company will be the least of the issue at that time.

In NYS, regular class D license covers a vehicle with a GVWR or 26,000 lbs or less and tows a trailer with a GVWR of more than 10,000 lbs provided the GCWR is 26,000 or less. An R endorsement is needed for a RV with a GVWR over 26,000 lbs. A CDL is not required.

Changes for Drivers with Current Class D Licenses.
A driver with a Class D license can now operate a passenger vehicle, a limited use automobile, or:

- A truck with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 26,000 lbs. or less. (Before, a Class D driver could only operate a vehicle with a GVWR of 18,000 lbs. or less.), and
- A truck with a GVWR of 26,000 lbs. or less that tows another vehicle, and the other vehicle has a GVWR of 10,000 lbs. or less, and
- A truck with a GVWR of 26,000 lbs. or less that tows another vehicle that has a GVWR of more than 10,000 lbs., but the gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of the two vehicles together must be 26,000 lbs. or less.

A driver with a Class D license can now operate a personal use vehicle (for example a rental vehicle or a recreational vehicle or RV) with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 26,000 lbs. or less that tows another vehicle that has a GVWR of 10,000 lbs. or more, but the gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of the two vehicles together must be 26,000 lbs. or less.
