Extending your range

I have been researching auxiliary fuel tanks. But learned it was not gonna be a cheap idea; usually in excess of $700. But then one of the salesmen told me I could carry extra 5 gal cans! Bingo! The light came on! So, I'm going to buy four 5 gal fuel cans, secure them at the bulkhead of the pick up and maybe not have to be concerned about maneuvering in small gas stations. I'll just fill up from them when necessary, then top off after dropping the TT. This will definitely come in handy when we finally get our 5er!

You can do that but from a risk assessment standpoint I would not put any gasoline tank in a pickup bed in front of a fifth wheel. At the very least I would have to think about it long and hard.

Just my opinion.

X2 - I would suggest you rethink this. You might be exposing yourself to more problems than you think - legal, insurance etc.

Not that it makes much difference. But this is diesel fuel, vs gas.

That is some better, but I still wouldn't do it.

We were very fortunate that the used TV we purchased a couple of months ago had a Transfer Flow 70 gal auxilliary tank already installed. We haven't been on any distant trips yet but I imagine it will be a great feeling to wave at the gas stations as we pass by!

I imagine that "great feeling" might go away when you finally have to refuel with 70 plus gallons of fuel.

We've done it once. 104 gallons. It bites, trust me

On the other hand, the fuel prices in our area are generally cheaper that most so we figure it will save us a few $$ to fuel up here and not have to do it where it's more expensive. Not having to maneuver a 40' trailer through truck stops is an added bonus.

My short bed Duramax Diesel has an 18 gallon tank.

I won't drive LOCALLY without 10 gallons (2 - 5 gallon cans) in the truck bed.

When traveling I also carry 2 - 2.5 gallon gasoline cans for the generator and a 20 pound bottle of propane for the fire pit and grill.

I can not begin to tell you the number of times those jugs get dumped into the truck tank.

The most recent one was on the NJ Turnpike where a guy in a pickup blocked the ONLY diesel pump (at a rest stop under construction) and went in for dinner. You have no idea how "hot" under the collar over that one! Luckily I just dumped 5 gallons in and it was enough to get me home.

Alan you are right, I went and did the same as you and just got 5 gal containers. Sometimes its pretty easy to over think/engineer a project.

Lou - I just don't think it is a good practice to carry fuel/ propane containers in a pick up truck bed, but I can't cite any laws against it.

Have you ever checked your vehicle insurance policy for any clauses against doing so?

Where's the problem with carrying fuel in the back of a pickup? How do people get gas home for the lawn mower?

Well since I don't have a lawn mower anymore I don't do it. I guess it is a personal decision.

I would rather have 4 GI cans of fuel than the alum 50 & 75 gal tanks sitting in the front of a pickup with a 5er. They have used tanks in the back of construction pickups for the last 50 yrs that I know of and have never heard of any problems with them.

Wouldn't think twice about putting 4, 5 or 6 cans in arjerram, just make sure you get a cargo pole to secure them so they don't move.

Can't forget we're talking about Diesel here, not even close to the flammability of gasoline.

I still would make sure I used jerrycans. These things are meant to take it. Developed by the Germans in the 1930's for their military.
