Been doing this all winter (paper egg carton stuffed tight with dryer lint and filled with melted dollar-store candle wax) and now have one of those huge plastic pretzel jars full for the season.

We have also made some out of old candles and dryer lint using old egg containers.

I also use the egg carton dryer lint a paraffin wax starters. I buy used candles at estate and rummage sales for cheap. usually can get a box full for a buck or two. Even if the estate sale people have them marked high just ask who's going to want to buy used candles and offer them a couple bucks for a lot of them they usually sell them rather than get stuck with them. These work excellent I can usually get my fire going with just one cube or two. My fellow campers have been amazed by them.

Lots of judgemental folks on here. The 2 or so plastic cups that are burned burn quick and the smoke is no worse than starting a new fire. As for the diesel, we are talking about 4-5 ounces at most and it is all gone once the fire is going on its own. It is safer to store than bbq starter fluid.
Burning our paper trash to us is a lot more ecological than bringing it back home to put in a landfill. 99% of our trash is paper towels and the occasional plastic disposable cup and wrappings.

Don't worry about me camping next to you, we camp to get away from civilization and people and campgrounds with dogs barking, kids running around screaming defeats the purpose for us.

Good fire tip: We occasionally line the base of our fire ring with a couple 20lb bags of wood pellets used for wood pellet stoves-about 3.50 per 20lb bag. This gives great heat output and burn clean without having flames shooting up 3-4 feet and higher. I have had chairs, patio carpets, and clothing damaged by shooting flame sparks.

Yep, have used those too but made the mistake of roasting marshmallows over them...these don't burn clean due to all of the wax in them ;-) That was an embarrassing beginner mistake.

Many good pyrotechnic ideas, but I use my liquid charcoal fire starter as we barbecue a lot anyway. Other than that, pine cones really start a fire, fast!

Sometimes materials are difficult to find in certain established campgrounds. Other than burning paper & plastic products. You may just want to consider Charcoal. We always bring Match Light because it doesn't even need Lighter Fluid. We build a small pile of around 10 or more pieces. It stays on long enough & is HOT enough to start even damp wood. It works better than any thing we have tried in the past. We don't like the ash that comes from burning paper as the ambers could be a potential risk to my PUP. Throw another Log on the Fire

If you are trying to be/go Green then it's carbon footprint may be something of a turn off.

I tried an experiment many years ago. I went to a local carpet retailer and got a cardboard tube that carpet is rolled on. Then I set up a jig on my chop saw and cut the tube up into 1 1/2 inch doughnuts. Mixed a concoction of half kerosene and half diesel. Soaked the doughnuts in mixture for 2 days then put them on a wire screen to drip dry. Then I individually put each one in a zip lock bag. One doughnut burns great for approximately 10 minutes. They lasted for years. Well worth it at the time but now it's just throw the wood in the pit and light the propane torch!

I buy a fireplace log and cut off a nice hunk and use that that to start a fire. Works great even with damp wood.
Liquid Oxygen works better, but it's difficult when you have to stand back 20 feet.

I usually use tiki torch fluid. Paper in wads beneath the teepee of lighter kindling. Goes up fast, add more wood and good to go. I'm impatient though.

+2 on bacon grease and greasy paper towels as well. No aftertaste when grilling steaks or venison burgers.
