Fix For Slippery Mattress

We love the floor plan on the Rockwood 2204S with the twin beds up front. But the issue we had was although the two mattresses are comfortable they are light weight and slide all over the place which means the bedding is also always a mess. It is designed that way to convert into a giant King bed with two additional mattresses that fill the middle aisle.

We knew that we would never use it as a King so it would always be a mess. We disposed of the little filler mattresses right away-who’s got room to store those and if I wanted a bigger bed I would have purchased a model with a bigger permanent bed.

I decide to fix the issue we needed to stabilize the head and foot of the mattress but still allow it to lift to access the storage boxes.

For the head we planned on building a box or small dresser on top of the low flat shelf between the beds that acts as a very low table. This needed to be 17.5 wide to hold the mattresses. And we thought about 9” in height would be about right providing a nice drawer for additional storage. I started looking on-line for a pre-built unit like that when I ran into metal boxes with drawers which lead to metal shelf safes. Hey, my wife loves the idea of a safe-bingo! We purchased a Verifi brand fingerprint smart safe with the exact dimension we were looking for-or close. I had some scrap cherry flooring which I glued to the top of it and we bought a table lamp from Target that we converted to 12 volt for a great reading bed light. My wife also found Beddy brand combo sleeping sheets, blankets, comforter to make and keep a bed made. If anyone is interested in doing something similar check out Verfisafe.com and Beddys.com

Regarding the issue of the mattress squirting out on the foot I made a bracket out of high density polyethylene (white cutting board material). I simply developed the width I needed by playing with different pvc irrigation fitting I had. I found two that gave me my dimension, used pvc glue, drilled holes, cut a handle and screwed directly into aluminum frame of the mattress box. Now I have a stay for the mattress and a nice handle to raise the mattress box top to access the storage.

Maybe these tips and tricks can help others.

If you are happy with the twin layout, most people are not happy with the factory supplied mattresses. look for comfortable mattresses that are also nonslip. there are several companies that make RV mattresses to size. Others will probably post who they got theirs from. The last one we bought was from a local guy that used three layers of progressively more dense foam and a zip on cloth cover that could be washed. it was far and away more comfortable than the factory matts.[ I would hate to call it a mattress]
Good Luck DR

Thanks for your response Dangerranger! So far the mattress’ are not too bad. I did notice mine is starting to sag a little this week. So we eventually will be in the market for new better built ones. I’ll keep my eyes peeled on the forum for suggestions or look locally when the time comes 😎. Appreciate the heads up.

We keep our mattress and cushions etc. in place using "Area Rug Pad Carpet Underlay Mat" . . . works like a charm.

Yes Creedmore, I also use the area rug mat on top of the dinette table to keep the cushions from sliding when our grandkids sleep there. And it is amazing how well it works.

But, I was looking for a more permanent fix for mattress shifting/bedding coming out especially after lifting the top to access the storage box. I not only fix the bedding issue but also created extra storage, a lockable drawer for items kids don’t need access to and a nice table height for a lamp-saved me trying to put in separate puck lights over each bed.

The foot stay is a nice handle too which the lack of, a pain to find a good place to raise the platform.

Appreciate your comments. Does Creedmore have anything to do with 6.5? My favorite in a Kimber brand.

No, but I understand the reference.

Actually, my User Name is a shortened less formal version of my given name i.e. Creedmore P. Crawley III. Throughout life I have always been called by some variation of that, mostly to distinguish the three generations of us.

Growing up some of my good friends called me Cree.
My Mother simply called me P.
Girls at school always called me Cree P.
My older brother called me the little III.

For the sake of brevity I prefer to be just called Cree P. Crawley… I guess that bugs some people.

Now that is really funny! No disrespect.

You sound like an interesting guy, down to earth and lots of fun. I’m glad I asked about your name-made my day. 😎
