Hand pump for well water

Wherever I have lived or worked I opened a valve to get water.

I don’t know how to use a hand pump but I want to learn.

When I use the dump station at Cabbala’s there is a hand pump nearby. I tried moving the handle up and down but it doesn’t move. I don’t know of if I have to release something or if the pump is broken.

Can anyone educate this city boy? [emoji846]

Yard Hydrant?

Are you talking about a yard hydrant? One of these?

If so, that is not a well pump, like so many people think — it is just a frost-free faucet. You lift the handle and the water turns on. When you drop the handle, the water turns off and drains into the ground about 3’ below grade.

Yep, not a hand pump. Yellowstone and Glacier had these.

Bruce is absolutely right on what you were probably seeing. They also tend to be pretty tight to lift after they've been in the weather for a few years and not maintained. There is also usually a little delay between when you open the valve and start receiving water as it has to flow back up the vertical pipe.

And the water often doesn't flow at all on the first 3/4 of the handle movement. Many I have encountered only flowed water at full open. Not a drip before that.

Now... if you are truely talking about a hand operated pitcher pump, many of those need primed before they will pump.

Back in the day, there was ALWAYS a bucket of water next to the pitcher pump and you never completely emptied that bucket because you needed some of that water to prime the pump to refill the bucket and get other buckets of water.

The bucket always had a tin cup with a long handle on it and you would dip water out of the bucket, pour it into the pump (at the stem) and begin pumping the handle. Usually, after about 20 pumps (depending on well depth) the water would begin to flow with each pump of the handle.

Once you stopped for even a few seconds, you likely had to reprime and start all over.

Yep....got two of those down at our cabin. One is actually in the heated bathroom for main water supply. No winterizing.

Ok...maybe this is dumb, but was the handle "locked" or had a pin in it ?? I lock the handle on our hydrant down at cabin.

Yeah, that looks like what I saw.

Thanks to you and the other guys.

Good info, also about being frost free.

That handle didn’t budge. I was thinking it might have been locked but I didn’t take the time for a close examination.

I am planning to go back today to shop and dump. Hopefully I can figure it out.

So are these are connected to a regular city water line?

There was no obvious lock. Where would a pin be located?

Was it a hydrant like in the posted pics ? You would probably notice if it had a lock or pin in the handle. There's hole at the very end of the handle and when when handle is fully down, it lines up with another hole on the hydrant so the handle can be locked in place.

This may help you understand better.
This particular model keeps ground water from entering the drain feature on conventional frost free hydrants.

No, nothing through the handle.

Maybe it needs some lube.

Yes, hooked to regular pressurized water line. The valve is below the ground.

If you got no water after lifting the handle all the way up, they may have turned the water off inside the store...

I wish I knew about these when I moved into this house. They seem convenient.

I couldn’t budge the handle. I wonder if it needs some lubricant.
