Keep holding tank odors at bay while in storage

If you store your rig for any extended period of time (especially in hot climates) the water in your P-traps can evaporate leaving a clear path from your sinks and shower straight to your holding tanks and allowing odors to come into the rig. This can be really bad if you have a bathroom sink plumbed to the black tank as we do!

To stop this from happening, we run a small amount of water down each sink and the shower every couple of weeks to keep the traps full and working as they should....

Excellent advice. You can also pour a little mineral oil in the drains to prevent evaporation. It's lighter than water so it floats on top and doesn't harden like vegetable oils would. It works if you don't have access to your rig for long periods of time. I've even heard of people adding it to their batteries. I'm not brave enough to try that though.

I will have to try the mineral oil thing... that sounds pretty good.

We park our trailer in North Texas, (103°F yesterday), and yeah, the odors can be a big issue. We added a venturi wind vane to the sewer vent on top of the TT. The slighest breeze pulls out the odors and it works very well.

We use Downy liquid fabric softener in our tanks. It coats the inside of tanks. The smell is contained, the tank walls become slippery. We haven't used biodegrable toilet paper or chemicals in 5 years. We do used the "Ultra Downy", which is more concentrated. So 1-1.5 capfuls is enough for active use. 1.5-2 for storage.
