Looking for easy storage for 50 amp elec cord?

Went from 30amp to 50amp, woh what a huge electrical cord! Any clever ideas on storage between trips or possible reels to wind it up? Its so hard to just stuff & cram into outside cubby (heavy too)

I always wrapped mine inside of a 5 gallon bucket. In cooler weather, it could be a bit of a workout but I always got it in there.

My fulltime secret is that it now just gets throw in the truck bed!

I've watched folks younger than I am coil that anaconda up on the ground and pick the entire thing up and try to stuff in a cubbie in one great heave. Not me, I'm too old and weak for that. I put one end in the storage bay and coil the cord up a loop at a time in the storage bay. That way, I'm only lifting 4-5' of it at a time. Works for me by YMMV.

Our CC came with a 50a cord......I do not use it unless we are camping for a long period of time and running the AC ..i.e Fl for 3 months.. I purchased a 30a cord and adapter and I use that most of the time especially in cooler climates.....No problems so far....My 50a reel went to the bone yard....

One for electric and one for water - they stack on top of each other in the tiny bay of the truck camper. Measure the length from the ground to the camper inlet and tuck that part in when done. The rest is coiled in the main part and I only pull out the length I need at each site. When leaving that part coils in much easier for me anyway.

I also use a 30 male to 50 female cord (approx 30 ft) 90% of the time. i keep it coiled on a plastic extension cord reel and hung in the basement

Here's what I did...go to your local grocer and simply ask for a 4gal milk crate. They are lightweight, but heavy duty plastic. I simply coil my 50A cable into the crate and remove only the length I need to reach the plug-ins. Added bonus...the crates have slotted carry handles for easy pickup and carrying. Best of all...it was free. (I would show a picture, but I can't figure out how to do it. This is not a very user friendly site to me.) If anyone could tell me how to add pics, I would appreciate it. Thanks

Never mind on the pic inserts. Must have had it and didn't realize it. Anyway, the pic shows what I use. Easy to pick up, carry, and it's free. Happy Camping.

Don't waste your money on the vinyl bags they make for the 50 amp cords. As soon as it gets colder you'll never be able to stuff it in there. I just coil mine semi loosely and lay it on the bottom of my fifth wheel compartment. I usually stack my hoses and other lighter cords etc. on top and call it good. Kind of a pain, but think no matter how you store it that's going to be the case.

just a heads up you should not leave the cord coiled up while in use it creates heat there for it will draw more amperage could also over heat the cord

It gets coiled up and stored on the floor in a corner of the MiniLite ETC when we're traveling and taken out and used when we're stationary. Not a problem.

I have the 50a on the Mor Reel but still hate the heavy thing so I use a 30a cord almost all the time and it is hung on a hook on the back of my basement door. The reel works well but you must allow space to swing the handle.

We loop it up and open the front door and toss it in on the floor to the left of front door!! It's the first thing that comes out when we arrive at destination!! If it had to be stored for a long period of time, it would go into the bench of the dinette storage, currently that is where the extension of it resides.

I hadn't run across this advice before, and at first was tempted to dismiss the idea outright. I assumed someone came up with a wild theory regarding induction generated from coils around an air core... That I could debunk.

Then I did a little google research, and it seems it's simply a heat dissipation issue. There HAVE been instances of coiled cords melting and shorting, due to a tightly packed coil of insulated wire not being able to dissipate the heat it generated, with no spacing for air circulation to aid in heat dissipation. That does makes sense, especially if you were running close to max current for an extended period of time... Like, for instance, a 30 or 50A cord powering an RV...

Henceforth and forever forward, I'll never use a cord while on a reel, especially if its mounted inside a compartment on my RV. A loose coil on the ground would be much safer.
