I don't like campgrounds. I had to stay in one a couple of weeks ago while at Karchner Caverns. They are like trailer parks. You can hear your neighbor talking while inside. Their dog comes over and pees on your tires. Your neighbor has these little LED lights strung on the ground around his rig and leaves them on all night. Kids running up and down the street after dark acting like kids. My 7 & 5 year old grand-kids even asked us why we were staying there.

If I were traveling and needed a place to stay just for the night and get on the road again, I would definitely stay somewhere besides a campground. Since I just retired and my wife retires in May, we have only traveled to destinations that have been less than one day away. Some have been long days. We camp out in the desert or forest....depends on why we are there. Mostly camp with friends and family at lakes and good riding spots. I'm glad I live in Arizona...we still have tons of room out here and in neighboring states.
....and there are lots of Walmart's and rest areas that can and ARE used for overnighters.

I'm finding it fun to use the Google Map features along with Good Sam app and others mapping a route. Trying to hit as many Passport America spots along the way to save money. (Gotta pay attention to the fine print!) The plan is to arrive at a site by 3pm or so in order to set up in daylight until I'm more comfortable with that process. Back on the road by 10am or so. We have the time so we're not in a rush. Knowing there are always "plan B options" in stopping at rest areas or store parking lots is a comfort should weather or traffic become an issue. Thanks again for the input. Safe travels everyone....hope to meet up on the road!
Welcome to the forums and welcome to the RV Lifestyle Pam & John!!

Sounds like you are having a blast in retirement - keep it up, you are doing it right

Here is another suggestion for your RV planning - it is a fee-for-service website but probably the best travel planner out there - especially if you need "options" and those options can change

Home of the Best RV Trip Planner Ever - Give it a try!

For 37/Year we find that it really suits our travel and travel planning needs.

When we overnight while traveling or spending some time in one place, I generally have two criteria:

1) Safety - Personal safety and equipment safety.

2) Noise - I'm an extremely light sleeper. If we spend the night at a rest area or truck stop, I seem to always find the spot that refer trucks like to park in.

Although we occasionally spend a night at the Walmart, we avoid the Super Walmart's that are open 24 hours a day.

We take advantage of Passport America and look through the book as we're getting close to stopping time. finding something several miles off the main raod is generally nice, I don't think we've ever spent overnight in the same place twice...

My cardiologist refuses to stay at Walmart. Too pricey.

I have been pulling for 42 years and have more fingers than nights NOT stayed in a CG. When 'stuff happens' I try to pull into a rest area. Have stopped at Pilot/Flying J too. Once in KS it was just off the side of the road on US 160. Once along the highway along the road to the Grand Canyon as there were zero sites available. These times were only out of necessity and no longer than absolutely required.
Generally, we use an app on the phone to plan ahead an hour or so more on the road to find a CG. Before cell phones it required much more planning.
My only wish is more and more would stop a Wally World or Wherever World as CGs are getting tougher to find on short notice. Just not my idea of a place to relax for a night. In an emergency I would stay anywhere except Walmart, have not had any use for them since Sam Walton died. Sam did his commercials always stating everything was made in the USA, now they are all an extension of China.

My last WM camp out cost me over $200... how is that being cheap? (That is how much my bride spent at WM outfitting the new camper)
