I also see that the chain right of the central point is going to the left side of your TT and vice versa. When you connect to your TV it creates a cradle, though a small one.

The mfgs do this type of connection often, so it must be sufficient enough to pass state laws.

Back to my original point, crossing the chains on my trailer doesn't provide any measurable benefit.

That works if you have chains that are mounted under the tongue with a definite left and right side. These chains are mounted on the front of the tongue and at center. Crossing them does nothing and they still hang in a left / right configuration.

Zero dollar fix. Couldn't see investing in bigger hooks, bigger chain, anchor shackles or the dozen or so alternatives I've seen.

Personally, I would prefer the tongue of my trailer to dig into the road. That would be a better alternative to having it crash through the back of my truck (although I do cross my chains).

Give the chains a twist to make them shorter.

Yeah, that GM class IV hitch is a PITA for safety chains.

I installed 1/2" Crosby anchor shackles and the tow hooks fit fine now.

That was my original plan, then realized I could grind part of that catch down and they fit great then.

That's why I did the latch. Doesn't change the integrity of the chains or hooks installed by factory.
