Trailer Towing Mishap

For those of you that tow a trailer or car hauler behind your RV,I'm going to share a mishap that happened to me.
Obviously I hate telling on myself but seeing as how I've now talked to 3 other people that made the same error,I feel it's worth mentioning in hopes of preventing a potential catastrophe and or accident
Missing the hitch pin hole.
Before you say "What Idiot would ever do that"I'll say I'm one of those idiots.
How did it happen?
I bought a new Horse trailer and my regular drop hitch was too low so I ran to Lowes and bought the proper drop.
Only problem? The new "arm" was 4-5
Inches shorter than the hitch I had been using for 8 years.
Out of habit,I slid the new one in the receiver to the "normal" spot while feeding the pin in and it slid right "in"
Only problem?I Not only missed the hole,I missed the whole hitch.
Hitch popped out 4 miles from the farm with my two horses in tow
Yep,I stopped immediately when I heard and felt the "bang" and the safety chains did their job but I was devastated.
I don't make these kinds of mistakes,or so I thought
Well It happened to a friend a few years ago (I later found out when he tried to make me feel better) and today,a stranger just outside my neighborhood did the same thing.
A woman that also stopped to help admitted she did it once too.
I hope this never happens to any of you and felt it was worth sharing even if it makes me look bad
I still beat myself up over this one.

You did not mention it, so I assume your two horses are OK.

Happy to hear the horses didn't get hurt. This hasn't happened to me "yet" but it did happen to my neighbour with his boat in tow. His safety chains didn't do the job. I'm extra careful because of that.

Horses were fine
After I collected myself and continued to our destination,we rode them and they did great.
Thanks for asking
They are important members of the family
