I know it's the law in North Carolina, especially if you build a trailer and try to get it titled. Been there, done that. I suppose it's to keep track of the parts in case your trailer winds up in a chop shop somewhere. Not sure what happens if an axle gets replaced. Probably nothing, like when an engine gets swapped in a car, does anybody get a new title with the correct engine number? One thing the car buffs look for, does the engine and VIN numbers correspond. But like engines in cars, not all that often an axle gets replaced.
