Doesn't want to change thermostats, doesn't want a bigger heater, doesn't want a tankless, sounds like a hopeless situation.

Can't user wash hair at home and just rough it for 3,4 or 5 days at a fishing hole?

after both old TT with the 6 gal tank, I always ran out of hot water. With the girard tankless I can shower for hrs if I wanted to and never run out. took a while to work the bugs out but it works flawless now.. girard customer service is terrific, they even sent me parts when the unit was out of warranty for free, and they will walk you thru troubleshooting issues for hrs if need be..

endless hot water is not the solution when you don't have an endless grey water tank

Amen brother!

We always practice "Navy Showers" in the camper even when we have sewer hookups. If you forget "just once" and take that 20 minute shower, your feet will be swimming in water with soap in your hair and you will need to break camp to drive over to the dump station (or download to your Blue Boy Tote).

Since you should always have your holding tank valves closed even in hookups, getting out wrapped in a towel with soapy eyes to dump your gray tank is no fun either.

A couple of showers-------------

After a couple of showers of not rinsing the soap out of her hair and not having enough hot water (cold rinse is the pitts), I'm sure she will rapidly
adapt to NAVY showers.

Like OC said, change your thermostats first (first mod I made in March 2011)
which will be a training period of not taking "HOLLYWOOD SHOWERS" as we said in the NAVY you will learn to adapt!

You can always send her to the lake or swimming hole to lolly around as long as she likes.

Good luck on your endless showers!!

Did not say we take showers when ruffing it, just stated that we mainly have no hookups when we camp. My original question was for our once or twice a year long travel trips were we stay at RV parks and have hookups.

The question was simple, has anyone replaced a water heater, not how do I train my wife to be a Navy sailor. I like the fact that my wife likes to fix herself up even when in the trailer, yes it is inconvenient, but she looks better than I deserve. I just want to do something nice for her by increasing the hot water heater by 4 gallons. not a big thing for a happy wife that has followed me all over the world through 36 years of federal service.

This should help.

http://www.pplmotorhomes.com/parts/r...FYc7Ogod92IA9w

Currently on sale.

If you have room, here is the new 16 gallon model.

Lou, great minds think alike. I was also researching youtube videos to show the OP what it may entail to replace the water heater. Here are two more:

That 16 gallon water heater looks awesome.

Just remember you will need to increase the size of the wall opening (the 10, 12, and 16 gallon units use bigger holes) and you will need to order a larger door as well (they do not come with the replacement units).

Far as I know, Suburban's (BY FAR the most common) are not adjustable except by thermostat replacement. Atwood units not only do not require an anode, but SOME have adjustable thermostats and there is an aftermarket adjustable one for most models that do not ship with one.

little off topic, but if Atwoods don't require an anode rod, why do the sell them specifically for them? I put one in mine right after buying it in January, just to read later that not necessary. I understand now why it doesn't "need" one, but yet they sell them....HMMMM

Gotta LOVE marketing!

Atwood Water Heaters Brochure

They only make a 6 and 10 gallon unit though.
