what do you do when you are connected to sewer hookup?

We just returned from a long week end at Old Orchard Beach in Maine. It was the first time we had a camp site with full hook up. We were not sure the best way to deal with the black and grey water draining in to the sewer. Do you open the valve and let the waste dump in to the sewer or do you let it go in to the tanks and then empty the tanks on a regular basis? My husband felt letting the tanks fill and then emptying them once a day would keep the hose from becoming plugged. What are your experiences?

Fill them up, flush black first and then cleanup the hose by flushing gray and galley.

Let them fill for 3 or 4 days with the valves closed. Open the black tank first, if you have a black tank flush, use it until the water is clear and then close the black tank valve for about 30-45 secs and shut it. Open the grey tank valves and empty them which will somewhat clean the slinky. Close valves and repeat in 3 or 4 days. Of course the 3 or 4 days time depends on your usage.

Never ever leave your black tank open. Always keep a couple of gallons of water in it to prevent the stone mountain from forming. Dump when approx 2/3 full. If you need to dump before 2/3 full then fill with water before dumping. Flush tank until clear, close drain and add some more water. I also recommend the geo method to manage your tanks.

A little off subject. In original post, I see Old Orchard Beach (brings back memories). I live and grew up in California. My mothers side of the family lives in Brunswick, Maine. As I was growing up I would visit family every two to three years and Old Orchard Beach was always a stop. There is so many cool places to visit in Maine. Thinking of them Lobster Rolls are making me hungry.

Anyways, I let my black tank fill to a little over 3/4 then dump followed by the grey tank.

Be safe and happy camping to all.

I agree, Maine is great! Thank you for your advise on what to do with the tanks when hooked up to sewer.

Never leave the black tank open let it fill almost fill before dumping and since you are hooked to full hookup use a lot of water flushing 2-3 times when doing #2 then when you dump the tank fill it again with water then drain to give her a good rinse. Then dump the grey tank. I do leave the grey tank open most of the time at our seasonal site and have never had problems but do close it on occation and let it fill and drain.
