I install the lighted switch right by the door that is lighted so whatever we can leave the camper we can see inside we can shut it off that's helped a lot.

Will the water heater work when switched to electric when on battery power or does it need to be plugged into shore power?

Shore power only (or propane).

I forget something new every trip. I usually figure it out. Most times it has not cost me too much. Only once was it over 100 to fix...i get into a routine but each time there is something just a bit different...either no water and I am on the tank or no sewer and I am not. Once no power and another forgot a chock. Another time a storage door. Lots of walking around helps now too. I still forget but I catch it before I leave now.

List are the best way I think to go !!!
We start a list of things we need to do & want to take,,, weeks before we plan to leave,,, we normally add some thing to it most every day,,, we keep the list from the trip before we use that to start our new list,,, we also keep a short list in our unit,,, when we are out and find something we want for next trip we add it to the lists !!!
Sorry to say but we have lists & notes every where,,, but we forget less than our kids do !!! Using lists & notes should be added to the 3 Rules of Getting Older !!!
LOL !!!

These work very well for a lot of things. We put up those little 3m command hooks at each place we needed to make sure we took care of, before we headed out and place one of these at each of them, as we turn them on, unhook them, etc. We also place one on the antenna crank as we deploy it upon arrival. Then leaving, we take the tags off of the hook as we stow, turn off, etc. We know we have 5. Before we lock the door, we count the tags and if we don't have 5 on the large hook inside the door, we know we forgot something.

If you have a driveable RV, you can use these, or the strips, which wrap around your steering wheel. You don't have to count those, you put the strip on your steering wheel as you set whatever up, then when you are leaving, you remove the strip as you stow whatever.

There was a member a while back that hung his keys on the antenna crank so he would not forget to put antenna down before they left !!!
I thought that was a GREAT idea !!!

Put a switch inside. (Replace the crappy RV 120VAC outlet that the WH plugs into with a real electrical box and a real 120VAC outlet.)

Yeah that's the thing. I used to be a pilot and had the check lists. But that was life or death stuff. Most of this stuff isn't. I could probably drive around with the antenna up 90% of the time and it wouldn't matter. My worst screw up so far was leaving a deck chair leaning against the rig when I let the jacks down. The chair got caught on the generator door hinge. Luckily for me the hinge was stronger than the chair and bent the chair. Imagine if it ripped the hinge off. What a mess. Now I always walk around the coach before I retract the jacks. I won't be forgetting that one soon!

Circle check is the best you can do. Can't miss/forget anything if you always do a circle check. Even works for everyday driving!

Potatoes chip bag clips on the steering wheel work great. You can write on each one what you need to check before you take off. Of course you have to remember to put them on the steering wheel!

I have a small check list above the door on the inside that I use before closing the door and locking for the last time before leaving a site. Some of the items are:

TV Antenna down
Vents closed
Hot water heater off
Refrigerator to gas
Microwave secured
Oven pilot light off
Stove burners all off
Heat / AC turned off

There are more. It is just a typed up list of things to remember. Cut down and placed above the door(you could even put it in a small frame and hang it near the door) Since DW does some of the things and I do others. One of us will read it out loud so we can make sure we got everything.
