2000 Rockwood Premier Pop Up - Brakes?

We just purchased a used 2000 Rockwood Premier Series M-2516G pop up tent camper. As you might have guessed, it did not come with a manual. What kind of brakes is it likely to have and how are they controlled? Any help/guidance is much appreciated.

Also, is there any way to get a wiring diagram for the electrical system?

If it has brakes (and only the smallest models didn't), they will be the standard electrical brakes used in almost all campers since the 1980s (or earlier). Your tow vehicle needs an electric brake controller, the trailer needs a battery and an emergency break-away cable and switch to activate the brakes should the trailer break loose. You will have either a 6 or 7 pin cable to electrically connect the trailer to the tow vehicle.

Electric trailer brakes are basically the same as drum brakes used in cars for years, with an electro-magnet to activate them. The brake controller in the tow vehicle is turned on by the brake light switch in your tow vehicle. The brake controller sends electrical power to the magnets which activate the brakes. Sophisticated brake controllers modulate the brake power to mostly match the braking pattern of the tow vehicle brakes.

Electrical wiring diagram - highly unlikely. You might find one on-line somewhere. But Rockwood won't even release wiring diagrams for current production.

I would think that you should have an axle ID tag on the axle itself. Due to age I would be prepared to replace most of the break parts and assembly. Are you capable of inspecting the break assembly condition?

Look on the back of the axle for a stamp that showing model/serial number. Assuming they were using Dexter Axles in 2000 you can call Dexter Axle customer service and give them that info and they can tell you exactly what you have.

While I am not capable, my husband is. We just aren't very familiar with campers. He's more of a truck guy. He's also not very tech savvy, so I posted his question. :-)

Then I would check for an axle tag first to help identify for brake parts. Just consider if the brakes were not serviced, 21 years is a long time even if towed mileage was low.
