2008 Flagstaff 228d Popup Questions

We've had our new-to-us 228D for a couple of years now and I have a maintenance question as well as a mattress question.

Is there anything we should be doing to the lift system as far as maintenance? Should we be greasing it? If so, where?

Next, we stored our camper in a new place last fall and ended up with a mouse infestation. Chewed the canvas to the point of replacement, which we already did, and the mattresses. I am trying to find replacements, and the 80x60 queen is easy. The 80x70 king, not so easy. I found one that I want to get, but an concerned with height clearance. Can we easily fit a 6" foam without it getting too compressed. We remove the bedding before packing up at every trip, and my replacement curtains will be lighter weight. Just wasn't sure with the canvas.

Finally.... OCD me - is there any way to neatly fold up the canvas when closing???

Thanks in advance!

Underneath the camper, where your (4) lifter posts come down towards the center of the camper, you will find a housing that all (4) lifter posts go into. You should have (2) grease zerks on this housing, (1) towards the front and (1) towards the rear. (1) should be on top and the other on the bottom. This will grease the cable. You should have a pulley towards the back that the cable goes around. You can lubricate the spindle on this pulley with a spray lubricant.

Folding in the canvas neatly. I haven't found a way. We try our best to make sure it isn't bunched up by pushing it in as far as we can. Maybe someone else has a good system of folding the canvas.

What he said about folding canvas.

I remember reading a long time ago that when folding heavy fabrics - especially coated ones - that you wanted to avoid repeatedly creasing in exactly the same place. That's always been my excuse for not doing a neat of folding pop-up canvas, tents, and sleeping bags.

I pushed the canvas on our pop-up in as far as possible while lowering to avoid having too big a bunch-up that might stress latching down the fiberglass over foam roof on my Coleman pop-up. That roof was known for having issues, so I treated it with kid gloves as much as possible.

I would strongly recommend finding the manual for your camper (hopefully online) and reading the maintenance section. My 2016 228D has a considerable amount of maintenance suggested.

From the above lubrication to putting oil down the lifter posts that telscope the roof up to draining/flushing/winterizing.

Thanks! I'll see what parts of the manual we have. It's not a lot, and didn't have set up or take down instructions. Had to Google those!

I left our still in great shape factory mattress in there and bought a 3 inch thick foam topper.

Sams had a regular 3 inch foam king with 1 inch pad/topper I was able to cut the extra 8 to 10 inches off one end and it fits perfectly by tucking the extra length of padded topper underneath. In the end I also put a mattress cover over it to keep out moisture. When I close, once the bunks are pushed back in I have to drag it to the center of the camper body so the tent can fold in well and fit but it works.

Any time I see anything designated "RV" it really pisses me off the up-charge on it.

12V TV... $400 for a POS. I modified my $100 24" Vizio to run off 12V easy.
