battery wiring

Renovating a 2003 Rockwood freedom pop-up and am a little confused on the existing wiring set up. From the trailer's harness wiring there is an 8 awg white wire leading to the battery's neg side and a black 12 awg going to the plus side. Inserted in that black wire is a short 14 or 16 awg wire with fuse holder. It doesn't seem like this would be part of factory setup. Looks like it was altered for some reason by previous owner. Also, it has a 7 wire harness that had the red wire cut. Any ideas?
Thanks

Someone made a mess of things with a cob-job repair. The weakest link in the chain is the 14 AGW wire, which will create substantial resistance and a considerable voltage drop and current increase. The wire itself could fuse. Dumb.

Amazon can hook you up with decent 8 AGW wire for reasonable prices. I used this brand to setup my solar installation, and I like it. Super flexible with great insulation. https://smile.amazon.com/BNTECHGO-Si...rds=8+awg+wire
