Bike rack.

Have a question , I have a rockwood hw276 highwall I take 2 bikes this year but leave my tonneau cover on my truck and the tongue weight I'd already 450lbs. The highwall is to tall for me to use any type of mount for the roof racks. I'm wondering if I can use a rack on the back bumper. I know they say I can't do it due to the bumper not strong enough. But why am I use the bumper to support the bed. Not all the weight but some of it.

You answered your own question. Last part doesn't make sense.. But the bumper can barely hold itself together let alone a bike or two bouncing around down the road.

Yeah kinda figured that about the bumper. Bit I have stood on it to look at the roof and it held me and I'm 170lbs but not for 3 hours on michigan pothole roads! Thank you. Guess I'll have to figure something out

Only thing I understood was can you add weight to the rear bumper. Yes, you can but it needs to be reinforced (usually).

Just get someone to reinforce the bumper to the frame. I have met quite a few people who have done this on popups and had no problems.

You'll need to have a receiver welded and braced to the frame and bumper.
It's the physics involved with a bouncing loaded bike rack bending and flexing the bumper down and back.
This will eventually weaken the cheap bumper welds.

Do you want to put that rack on the back of the trailer? Not sure about that. I do not have any idea how much of the weight would be on the rear bumper. The difference between you standing on the bumper and your bikes is you are a static load, not moving much. The bikes, while maybe say 100 or 150lbs are or will become a dynamic load, moving around. They will bounce and vibrate and shake. Depending on how tall the mount is and other stuff it acts like a big leaver (think breaking bar) and will make that 100lbs seem like 300lbs until it shatters the welds or the frame / bumper material shear right off.

EDIT: on further loking that looks like the weight would all be on the rear wall of the TT not on the bumper?

Doc that mount I would use on the truck tailgate. It looks like it would work with a little mod top the top bars so I could still use my tonneau. Bur I don't know until I get it and both bikes mounted how it would affect the turning radius. But then I wouldn't have to be concerned about tongue weight or screwing up the rear bumper of the pup.

Oh, yeah you will prob not have the room for that. You'll crunch the bikes making a turn when you forget. They do make a mount that bolts over the A frame / propane cylinders to hold the bikes over the jack area.

Prorac? I have a highwall and the roof is about 5 1/2 ft closed. Guess I'll just threw them in the bed and take less stuff! Guess less stuff I take means less stuff I have to pack. Thank you

Not sure who makes it. I have seen two different co. that made it on here. Ends in a 2" hitch then you use your bike carrier. Stromberg Carlson might be one maker.

I did this with our Durango and Coleman Niagara camper. With the tongue of the camper, there was plenty of room to clear on turns and backing up.
