Extra weight on roof?

We have a Rockwood 2514G, the cargo weight capacity is 499 lbs. It has a roof rack installed and I’m thinking about adding a cargo carrier (weight limit of cargo rack is 150 lbs) for extra firewood, beach chairs, etc. We already carry our Clam on top. While I’ve never weighed the current contents, my guess is approx. 200 lbs max. including the Clam. My question is, any idea the carrying capacity of the roof/roof rack? There are no issues as far as the tow vehicle is concerned. Total weight is less that half of trucks rating.

It sounds like you already answered your own questions.

The roof limit is 500 lbs, and your gear is ~200.

I think you're fine.

I am not being clear. Total weight of gear is approx. 200 lbs. my issue is I don’t want to overload the roof. Right now the Clam is about 30, roof rack ~40 and a/c is ~90.

I guess I’m not understanding. You’ve got a roof with a 499 pound weight capacity.

You’ve got:

a cargo carrier
The contents of that cargo carrier
The A/C unit.

All of this weighs ~200 pounds (or 360 pounds is JUST the gear in the cargo carrier is 200). Which is less than the capacity.

So what is the issue/question?

in looking at the full specs for the last 4 model years, the total payload capacity is 600 lbs. Nothing is listed for the maximum roof carrying capacity. I would contact your dealer for that info. The weight of the AC is probably around 75 lbs by itself.
Remember that the 600 lb capacity is for everything in the pop up. dishes, food clothing etc.

WHAT?! The TOTAL CCC is only 600 lbs.

Sorry, they Way this conversation was going I thought just the roof capacity is 499.

That changes things a lot.
Ooof. I don’t know about putting an additional 200 pounds on the roof

I appreciate all the thought people are investing. It is only the roof I’m worried about overloading. Total cargo capacity of the pup is 600 lbs. I read that the a/c weight was 90. I carry the Clam on the roof. If I install a cargo carrier that will add 40. I’m just looking for opinions if I add roughly 60 to 75 lbs more to the roof do you think I’ll do any damage to the roof. Of course the cargo will be removed before I raise the roof.

I used to own a large Coleman PUP. It did not have an A/C unit, but it was built for one. It had that composite roof and had a CCC of 1,200 lbs.

The roof rack mounts were near the edge of the roof which the. Rested directly on the walls when lowered.

I wouldn’t have blinked twice about throwing 200lbs. On it. I walked on that roof and it was just fine.

I would say as long as the majority of the weight is not on the center of the roof, but is near the sides you’ll be just fine.

Me too. Coleman, no A/C. I mounted the clam shell to the roof so I could get in it from the door step and stored the dirty stuff like ax, saw, shovel, hose, fittings, blocks, BBQ, tarps, carpet, and the like. Just took out what I needed. Never unloaded it before popping up.
