Interested in Rockwood HW296 Feedback

I'm interested in purchasing a 2013 HW 296. I like it except for the fact that the discharge for grey and black water are separate. I've looked at a competetive name product and the competitor has it connected as a regular TT does and also it has a larger grey water tank(20 gal vs 12gal) which makes sense.. The Rockwood does have the 16 inch box which makes me overlook its shortcomings. Anyway any feedback from an owner of this model would be greatly appreciated. Also how much does towing it affect gas mileage. 15 years ago I had a 10 foot box camper that only affected my normal gas mileage by 2 MPG. It wasn't a high wall and only weighed 2500lbs.

We have the HW 277. What we liked about it over the 296 is that you can turn on and or load the fridge without having to open up the entire trailer. That makes it worlds easier to bring it home, open the door and turn on the fridge.

Second, with its second axle, i think loaded you will be close to its max weight of 4500 lbs. Even with my smaller version, we are at 3600. You should think of your tow vehicle and make sure you have enough oomph to move it. We started with a Honda Pilot and moved to a tundra because of where we live- every direction was a hill climb out.

I have recently purchased a 2013 HW296, It pulls really good, I am getting about 12~13mpg on the interstate at around 70~75 mph, I am pulling it with a 2011 ram 1500 5.7. The wind does not seem to bother this trailer at all, I have gone over the skyway bridge up in Tampa during High winds warning and it was fine. I had a 27 foot TT before this camper. Hope this helps some.

Oh yea, forgot to mention my solution for discharging the grey tank. I mated together a hose attachment to fit a grey tank pipe from amazon and the black tank rinse attachment from camco that I got from Walmart or amazon. If you take out the valve and the restrictive part of the rinse attachment, it makes for a much "cleaner" way to empty the tank. Takes a bit longer but anything is better than kneeling on the ground holding a sewer hose.

I'm with HONDAMAN, I also have a Rockwood HW277. We pull it with a Kia Sedona minivan. We got 18 miles to the gal when we went to Death Valley last month and just got back from Lone Pine California were we got 17 miles to the gal. We drive 55 mph on highway and about 40 mph up hill. No pushing it. Scott

We have been getting around 14MPG towing our HW296. We generally tow between 60 and 65MPH. We used to get around 10MPG when towing our previous TT (23' Outback), so this is definitely an improvement. As for the odd drain arrangement, we use the aforementioned Valterra T01-0091 and a length of regular garden hose to a Camco 39111 Item which fits snuggly into the sewer drain when using the Camco 39322 "doughnut". We have a 2010 Flagstaff HW296...pull it with a 2011 Ford Explorer 4x4 with tow pkg...get about 12mpg at 65mph/10-11mpg at 70-75mph. Love the camper!!! Also use a 2010 Toyota Tacoma with airlift rear suspension...tows nicely. I store the camper in the garage. I usually lift the top up approx 1ft which is enough to pop out the side dinette slide a foot or so, which allows me (or my kid) to get to the fridge. We LOVE this camper!!!

Forgot to mention: for some reason FR plumbed our PU like every other RV, so I have 1 output with a grey and a black valve for dumping.

My TV is a 2001 Chevy Silverado 1500 HD 4x4 Crew Cab, 6.0L V8, 3:73, K/N OEM Air filter. I get 10-12 mph while towing in tow/haul mode at 70-75mph. This seems to be the sweet spot with the best fuel mileage. this is based on my calc. not what the DIC says as I never really checked. But the next time out I will see how close I am.

Yesterday I posted a photo of how I resolved the poor grey water discharge hose issue. I'ts in the tent camper section. If not see the attachment.

I tow our HW277 with a 2011 Durango V8 and the worse I get is 14 mpg when towing (non-towing I get 19 city and up to 21 highway) -
The seperate black and grey, easy - we do not use the toilet in the camper - the bathroom make a great closet. And yes, I like 277 having the fridge in front, makes it very easy to load it up with the camper still closed.

It would not be too difficult to replumb the two sewer outlets together with a wye fitting, elbow and adapter. They use regular black schedule PVC like you buy at lowes and glue together.

Or you can do with a wye downstream.

We had the 27sc which is the Flagstaff. We looked at the longer twin axle 29, but wanted our weight under 3500 pounds in case we pulled it with something smaller. Ended up never pulling it with anything other my Excursion, got 16mpg roundtrip to Florida at 72-75.

Oh yes! I'm very excited to see this. I'm finding that it's a bit pain having it separate on my HW27KS
