Lost Refrigerator Vent/Access Door

I thought some of you would find this use of duct tape amusing. During our recent trip out West we lost the lower fridge vent. After some brainstorming, we moved the upper vent to the lower spot as we felt the lower was more critical (fridge pilot and burner). After procuring some duct tape, we crafted the vent shown in the first pic. A bit later in the trip we encountered rain and added the rain shield shown in the second pic.

Enjoy!

Great use of the ever handy duct tape!
No toolbox should be without it!

Interesting! Great ingenuity. Did you use just duct tape or is there some cardboard under the tape? My sons all did a project in high school physics where they made a boat using only cardboard and Tuck Tape. I’d be inclined to use the other cover to make a cardboard cutout and cover it in Tuck Tape, then use duct tape to secure it. The adhesive in the duct tape should be easier to remove later than the Tuck Tape.

"Did you use just duct tape or is there some cardboard under the tape?"

We actually started off using a "emergency blanket" we purchased from the camp store. It is a thin aluminized polyester material. After securing with duct tape, it was easy to cut the slots using a utility knife. Then we further secured the slots using more duct tape.

I learned the hard way to zip tie my covers to make a hinge. That way they can still be opened but can't fall off. All of my previous rigs were pretty old and replacement parts were hard to come by.

"Chop it like it's hot"?
Very creative use of materials on hand. Plus you probably raise a few eyebrows with the rain shield.

Yes Reverse_snowbird, I thought "chop it like it's hot" was appropriate as quite a bit of heat comes from that top vent.

Also lwbfl, thanks for the zip tie idea. When the new cover arrives, my plan was to add some backup security in case the quarter turn fasteners come loose again. I haven't figured out how yet, but I'm sure zip ties can do the trick!

No problem, makes checking things easier too when you can open it without completely removing it.

Here is a quick update using tie wraps after receiving the new cover (and frame which I didn't expect).
