Manual winch for 2004 Rockwood Freedom 2280

Hi,

I've just bought a second hand 2004 Rockwood Freedom 2280 which has come with a tempremental power winch which sounds like it's on its way out. Not wishing to get stranded with a stuck roof I'm looking to replace it with a manual winch (I know it's hard work but that's ok). The other advantage is that I free up the space used by the battery for a second propane tank.

So I have a couple of questions:-

1) I'm looking at a Dutton-Lainson winch as I believe that was what was originally installed but can anyone tell me what model to use? What force to I need to apply to overcome the roof and springs?

2) It looks like I will also need a longer handle than they supply to clear the trailer frame. Does anyone know what I need or can send me photos of their installation.

You may want to rethink getting rid of the battery if your pup has brakes. If the pup comes off the hitch while being towed, the breakaway cable activates the brakes and uses the battery for the power.
Can't help with the winch.

If you have brakes and you do want to dump the battery, you can always purchase one of these for the breakaway brake switch:

I looked at my 2004 Rockwood 2280. It's manual winch is from the same company and is rated at 1,200. Hope this helps.
