Mildew Odor

Each year when we open our tent trailer in the spring, we find some mold/mildew black dots on the canvas, no matter how many days we aired it in the hot sun before closing it for the winter. We always find a way to remove the dots, but can still smell a mildew odor. Does this mean there is still mildew somewhere in the T/T or will there always be a mildew odor remaining in there? Is it safe to sleep in there with that mildew odor?
New grandchild, so want to ensure it is safe for him. Thank you for your feedback.

I would suggest that if you are smelling mildew then perhaps the black dots aren't the only source of the smell?

I spent 8 months off and on telling a work colleague in the parking lot I could smell antifreeze around his vehicle so I was sure he must have a leak. He said he checked and had it checked and was certain I was wrong. Turns out he had a TINY leak where a fitting attached to the engine that evaporated/burned off before it could pool or drip but the smell was still there.....
