powerwinch tension issues

Happy camping season!! Prepping for the new season and we found that we have a lot of slack in our cable for the powerwinch that raises the roof on our HW296. Is there a way to tighten up the slack or do we need to replace the cable or unit. This is our first camper and we bought new in 2015 so we don't have alot of experience with winches. Any help or suggests is greatly appreciated.

Sounds like someone pushed the down switch when the roof was already completely lowered. Just bump the switch towards the up position to tighten the cable (don’t overdo it though you should be able to watch the cable tighten as you do it)—before you do this unlatch all four corners of the roof first just in case you go to far...you don’t want to rip your latches apart.

One thing we noticed late last season was that we would let go of the lever but the motor would keep going. We think there is more to the slack in the cable then that. Any other suggestions?

That’s not good, the power to the motor should cease as soon as the switch is released. Something maybe causing it to stick or a new switch might be the fix. I’ve attached a link to a parts provider —if you scroll down you’ll find a couple of winch switches they offer. If you call them and tell them the year and model of your trailer I’m pretty sure they can set you up with the switch you need. I called them in the past for other things and they seem to be a pretty good resource regarding pop ups because they maintain a rental fleet and sell new ones. Good luck.
