Rockwood mattresses

Why did Forest River build the beds in a non-industry size. My Rockwood 2280
front mattress measures 69x76.5 and the rear mattress is 59x76.5
I’m looking for a foam topper for both beds any suggestions?

Moved thread from the General Community Discussion section to the Tent Camper and Popup section since the OP's questions are specific to Popups and not general questions.

An electric carving knife works well for cutting foam mattresses. Don't buy new, a used one from Goodwill works well.

You have to be mindful of the thickness of the topper...a 1" topper probably won't interfere with the ability of the roof to drop all the way down when closing the camper...anything thicker, you're going to have to consider storing it off the bed when closing the camper.

A 1" topper probably won't provide you with much comfort either...but the mattress and 1" topper is still an upgrade from a thin pad in a small tent. I have a 3" topper for a little extra padding, plus the padded mattress cover, but I have to store the topper on the dinette slide (folded in half) when closing up. I don't use the queen bed at the other end. I realized I could not easily close the camper with the new topper, but I want that topper, so it stays.

Easy to do a nice job. Snap a chalk line or place a straightedge (1x2 or 2x4) on the mattress and use a Sharpie to make a line.

Grab your electric carving knife with two counter-motion blades from the kitchen, be careful to hold it perpendicular, mattress on a picnic table and you'll have a perfect cut in 2-3 minutes.

We have used toppers in the past, but this time around we opted for an alternative, to try out the Prosource Fit 24" x 24" Rubber Puzzle Interlocking Squares.

The ones we purchased from Lowe's are 1/2" thick, covering the entire bunk area, and with the extra 2 we had left over, we placed on top of the others creating a thicker pad for the hip area. That was our biggest pressure point problem area.

So far they seem to be working really well. We can definitely feel the difference.

We have a new 1940LTD with a “queen” on the tongue side and a supposed full in the back. I ordered 2 inch memory foam in queen and full size and put them underneath the mattresses. The queen fit almost perfectly but I had to trim the double longwise and then trimmed the excess to fit on the short side. It didn’t really fit at all as it was. The roof still closes with this set up but I didn’t put the bed supports or the C channels under the mattresses. At some point I want to mount a locking conduit carrier on the back bumper and keep those items in there.

We use a 3” memory foam topper in our 106 Clipper. We remove the opposite bed and replace it with the topper until we get to site. I’ve been meaning to trim the width a bit but it doesn’t interfere when closing the trailer. It’s a game changer for sleeping.

We have a heavy duty foam topper for the mom and pop side and a lighter one for the kids side.

the big one is folded in half and placed on top of the folded down dining table, fits perfectly under closed bunks on our HW. The light one on the front end where all the couches are in semi circle on our HW278.

We bought a king I believe for the front bunk for ~150 from SAMS that came with a think/heavy 1-2 inch padded topper and I cut it down and put it into a nice, waterproof zipper protector and just folded over the excess protector underneath when in place. Its been a few years but I think I just had to cut off 12 inches down one side and its good.

You absolutely can't leave them on top of the bunk when closed and expect easy roof closure/latching. If they are thick they will take up the space intended for the tent to lay

Yes. I bought a foam topper that is 2 inches. It is slightly smaller than the odd Rockwood mattress but causes no problems.

These weird mattress sizes are a little bit of a pain, but easy to work around. I have a slightly short version of a full size mattress on a murphy bed. The memory foam topper I bought at Sam's years ago was several inches too long, and started tearing where it stuck off head of mattress. I just helped it along with a good serrated kitchen bread knife.
