Bought my 2018 HW296 in 2017 and Anode Rod already needs replacing.
Thanks to my Next door neighbor owning Camping USA in E.Bridgewater Ma a Camping supply Store, she brought one home to me. It been replaced already took me less than 10 Mins.

That anode is still good. Plenty life left in it.
Have you ever seen the anode life chart?

You know mine is wearing out just like that. Instead of the rod evenly shrinking, it's deteriorating close to the threads. Oh well, at least they are cheap!

Yea, that's not even close to being worn out. Probably still good for another year or so.

they do not wear down evenly. That one pictured has alot of life left in it. i replace mine when it has about 25% or less mass remaining (my current rod is in its third season). but they are cheap, so does not hurt to change them out so early.

Your next door neighbor steered you wrong if she indicated that anode needed replaced. Maybe she never seen it and was simply providing one for you at your suggestion? Either way, you replaced it unnecessarily.
And while they are not terribly expensive at $10, if there is no need to replace it, save the $10 for when you really do need to replace it.

They deteriorate closest to the threads first because the threaded plug (that the anode material is connected to) and the bung in the tank the rod threads into, is a huge mass of steel compared to other parts of the tank. There is simply more electrolysis takes place near that mass of steel as it tries to do its job of protection.

It's a sacrificial metal. The electrolysis attacks it instead of the metal in the water heater tank.
You more than likely have one as I have never seen a water heater either in a residential house or a RV that didn't have one.
Just food for thought, I replaced mine after 10 years mainly because we wanted one with a petcock drain on it, when we get ready to leave the campsite it is easier to drain the water heater. Our water heater had a plug in it that required a wrench to remove.

In the first picture on the right side behind the pipe that goes from the gas valve to the burner it looks like an anode rod tucked in behind it. Hard to see it in the picture however it looks like the hex head on an anode rod.

Can't tell from the photos what brand water heater it is. Suburbans generally all have them, Atwoods (now Dometic) do not since they have aluminum tanks.
BTW... your center bypass valve is in the wrong position for normal use. In the position it is in, the cold will mix with the hot via the open valve giving you lukewarm water.
In and out (cold/hot) should be open and center closed (handle perpendicular to tube) for proper normal use. All three opposite that for bypass use.

Yes it was in the wrong position when purchased. Figured that out a while back and put it in the correct position.

I drained the fresh water tank after our last camping trip. Should the water heater also be drained before travel? And how would I drain it?

This is discussed here almost weekly.
Some do some don't. Depends a lot on water quality.
I have never drained ours once the camping season starts.
You should close the bypass valve on your water heater before opening the low point drains when not draining the water heater separately. You can suck calcium and crud into the plumbing system when draining where some will remain and be redistributed in the plumbing and clog faucet and toilet valves on repressurization.
To drain the water heater, first relieve all pressure, close bypass valves and remove drain plug or anode/drain plug combination. Open T&P pop-off to allow air in the tank while draining. Stand off to side to keep from getting a bath. NEVER drain a hot tank!

you drain it by taking the anode rod out
(and stand to the side unless you want to get wet).
i only drain the water heater at the end of the season, that rod is a bit of a challenge to get back in.
