What are the Vinyl straps over the windows for?

I have the Rockwood 1910ESP and over each main window is a 1" dark Vinyl strap with velcro at the bottom. I can't for the life of me figure out what they are used for. Any ideas?

Pictures

The straps hang down over the windows, and are velcro'd to the bottom, but the windows zip down and hinge at the bottom, so I can't use the strap to hold up the windows.

Our old popup had similar straps, but bottoms were sewn in. We'd unzip the window from the top down, roll up the vinyl window and the straps kept it in place so it wouldn't unroll onto the counter top. If window was only zipped down half way, we'd fold it in half and the straps kept it in place and it wouldn't flap around if the wind was blowing in.

What year is your camper? I've seen Jayco use those to hold the unzipped window but Rockwood has sewn in bottom velcro tabs that are used to hold/tie around the rolled up vinyl window when unzipped.

See velcro tabs at the bottom of my windows. They veclro together the 2 tabs to hold the rolled up window.

Perhaps Rockwood changed to this more sloppy design in 2020.

2018 Rockwood

Its a 2017. Yeah see that is what you would think the straps are for, but there is no second velcro strap to strap down the rolled up window. You would expect to find a small strap or velcro patch in between the vinyl window and the screen window, but there is nothing there. As far as I can tell there are no other attachment points for the straps at all, making them pretty useless.

Maybe like TheWolfPaq82 pointed out it will keep a half way open window from flopping around, but it doesn't really do anything for a fully open window.

I would get better pictures but I have it stored right now and wont get it out for another month.

Is there a mating piece of velcro near the bottom of the window vinyl? If so, I would say the designer expected you to
  • Unzip the window fully
  • Roll up the window so that the velcro patch is on the outside
  • Fasten the velcro strap to the patch on the rolled-up vinyl window to keep it neat
Note: It matters which direction you roll up the window.

You just have a strap attached at the top, then at the bottom of the window, RIGHT?

If so, that's it, your window isn't meant to roll up but just bunch up at the bottom, and the strap doesn't let it fall beyond the strap. Like I said, it's a messy way of doing it but Jayco and others have done the same for years.

Just realized my old 2005 Rockwood and 2007 Starcraft did the single strap way of doing things also. But that was 12 - 14 years ago so my memory just wasn't there. It's much easier than having to use velcro straps and most likely more expensive. Probably costs a whole 10 cents more. My Eureka tents do the short straps for the windows, like my current camper. For ease, the long single strap is the way to go.

our 2010 hw had the straps, they were attached at the top and the bottom was held in place with the velcro to the tent wall under the window. We could detach the strap so made it easy to roll up the vinyl window covering, reattach the strap to hold the vinyl window piece off the counter.

I was told that they are there to prevent the window coverings from falling into the stove when you unzip them.

I always thought the straps are there to keep the vinyl closure from puffing out during high wind when the windows are closed.
When we had our pop-up, we lost 2 straps on one side, during a rain storm (with high winds), the windows were closed up and the wind was making the side without straps puff out. The sides with the straps did not puff out.
Also the straps helped keep the vinyl rolled up when we had the windows open.
I wouldn't cut them off, they do serve a purpose.
