Canine Influenza (Dog Flu)

With so many of us visiting various campgrounds, just wondering if it might be a good idea to get our dogs vaccinated against dog flu. The canine influenza A H3N2 virus is responsible for an outbreak of dog flu in the Chicago area and there is not a vaccine developed yet. However, the H3N8 dog flu vaccine is available and may protect against the H3N2 dog flu virus. Just wondering especially with so many expected to attend the Goshen Rally this year, too.

I attend dog shows throughout the year and like you are concerned about the new dog flu. I asked our vet and so far they don't know if the vaccine offers protection from this new strain. Mine are vaccinated due to the amount of dogs at shows within a close proximity. I would go with your gut and talk with your vet, the original canine flu is still out there as well.

There have been cases reported here in NC already.
We are keeping our dogs away from bark parks and pet stores (or at least away from other dogs)

We went ahead and got the vaccination and booster (a month later) for both our pooches. No side effects for either of them and more peace of mind for us!

I would also suggest talking with your vet. I talked with mine, and like schnauzer mom above was told it may or may not protect. My vet also said that since I am staying in the northwest camping this year (MT, OR, and WA) and my dogs don't play with other dogs at dog parks, etc. that the shot wasn't needed.

But definitely let your vet help you make the decision. They have all the knowledge and most current info.

I also live in NC and my vet has said there is no effective vaccine and to stay with our regular vaccine program. As stated above, consult with your vet, practice common sense and be aware of the symptoms. Common symptoms are very similar to kennel cough (fever, runny nose and cough). Isolate your pet and Call your vet if your dog has these symptoms.
