I'd say with a dog you might have had a chance but try to tell a cat she should be doing...

But in truth, our cocker spaniel locked herself in and us out once. But there was a second key not too far away.

I was very hesitant to respond to this. And hopefully it will be taken as intended. Information.

I love all dogs. Big, small and medium.

I have always had big dogs. German Shepherds, Irish Wolfhounds, Rottweilers.

If one of my dogs misbehaved. I gave it a correction with a command or a leash tug.

Unnecessary barking. Being a misbehavior.

In my experience. And I realize it's my generality.

Little dog owners do not correct their dogs for any indiscretion. Happens all the time.

Last week I was in Petco. A little dog started barking at Stella. Stella started to react. I said no and pulled her away.

Did the owner stop her dog from barking? No.
I had to leave the store.

Happens at campground all the time.

Just my opinion and experience.

If you and your little dog are different. Accept my apologies.

Just saying.

True to dog behavior. The dog went as far away as it could from "living space" to poop. The owner was at fault, obviously.

You're right, I feel there's more uneducated littles out there than the biggies. Some owners even think their littles can't be trained. I then recommend watching agility shows...

Not RV related, but we stopped at a Petsmart Store. There was young women looking into a car that had small dog on the rear seat. It was 85 degrees and all the windows were rolled up. The dog was not responding to any of us beating on the windows.

I called 911 and a local LEO showed up after about 10 minutes. He broke the front window and unlocked the car. Put the dog in the shade and went to his car and got a bottle of water and poured on the dogs head. Finally, the dog started to respond.
The owner then showed up and had a fit. She said she was only in the store for 10 minutes. Total time we were there was at least 1/2 hour, so who knows how long before that the dog was in the car.

The officer wrote her a citation and she had to go before the magistrate. Sure hope the magistrate was an animal lover.
BTW, I asked the officer if it would have been OK for one of us to get the dog out and he said we could be charged with criminal mischief. REALLY?
My thoughts were to lock the owner inside a car for a hours in that kind of heat.

Some people just shouldn't own pets!!

My daughter volunteers for Cattle Dog rescue transport relay. She has two cages in her SUV when when does this. She secures the cages to the tie downs in the rear.

My wired hair Griffon pointer rides on the couch, with a leash from collar to female seat belt attachment. There’s a shelf in back of the couch she can get up on. As much as she loves riding in the car, she doesn’t like the RV that much. She DOES like to ride up on the dash (class A) but really can’t be secured up there.

Here’s what I do. Leave em at home where they belong in the yard.

Even a better idea. I've seen and heard too many locked up in the RV all day while the parents were out sightseeing. Not fair to the animal.

Ours used to stay with my daughter. She has 4 of her own so one more made no difference.

I will get on my soapbox here. All animals should be in a secure kennel that is firmly secured to the vehicle. This should be common sense that anything that is not secured is a potential projectile. This protects both the animal, the occupants and the vehicle. In an emergency or accident sequence the animal does not become a flying object that will hurt itself, others, or do damage to your vehicle.

If you don't secure it you are a fool.

There's something I haven't seen mentioned here as an argument FOR securing pets somehow. It's not safety during an accident (which hopefully will never happen) but also safety after it. Many pets are getting lost because they escape after an accident and run away, scared, making it especially hard to catch them. (You know how to catch a dog, scared out of their mind?). Or even at a stop...

If you already have a dog, it's preferable to stick to the same pattern in terms of walks, potty breaks, feeding, and so on. If they appear to be agitated, play music and conceal treats throughout the RV, like as beneath pillows and on the back of the couch, to keep them busy and happy.
