Lightbulb Getting the pill into the dog

Poor Dottie the Dalmatian

She's always been a klutz. That happens with Dalmatians. The vet (Dr. Y) said she could have been injured in utero or possibly survived having distemper. But now she's to the point of being pathetic and hardly able to walk at all.

ANYWAY...We called the vet (Dr B in the same clinic) and she prescribed prednezone. Now the question: How to get the pill into the dog. Answer: Dottie loves peanut butter, so she gets her pill ground up in a little PB sandwitch. But grinding the pill is a pain. Until my sweet wifes eloquent solution.

I had been using a pair of pliers to crush pills. But bits of pill go everywhere and the results are somewhat lumpy. The wifes solution: Put the pill into a zip-lock sandwitch bag and roll over it with a rolling pin. After about 5 passes the pill is a fine power and can be poured out onto the peanut butter. Save the bag for the next dose.

Now why didn't I think of that?

Radio

PS: The pills seem to be doing the trick. Dottie is much better now.

Have you tried cheese? That's what our vet recomends.

Our German Shepherd swallowed pills whole.
You simply grab the upper jaw, crank the head backwards, and poke the pill down the side of the throat and hold the upper jaw for a second while they swallow. Done deal.

Now the Pug...has to have the pill hidden in a chunk of meat. She usually swallows it whole the first time.

We buy "Pill Pockets" for our old Shitzu. Get 'em at the vet. They are like a soft dog treat. We buy the large dog size and break them up into thirds and wrap them around the pills. The pooch thinks it's a soft treat with a crunchy center

Dottie is smart. If any trace of pill is detected... PAH-TOOIE!!
Whatever you used for bait is gone and the pill is left in the bowl.

Another technique for those of you who like to be less harsh on the dog when you pill them is to do the following:

Pry apart jaws and tilt dog's head back. drop pill to back of throat or on rear of tongue. Hold dog's mouth shut and gently rub its throat area...it will swallow.

Unless you're an asthmatic Radio and have had prednisone, you wouldn't crush it. It is HORRIBLY bitter, and will gag you in a heartbeat. I am sure it's the same for dogs.

Maybe this would work?

Only joking...

Our pooch had a minor procedure today (removal of a small polyp), and I brought some pain med's home with her from the vet. I was nervous about her taking it down, but with the children handing it out, it was like a normal treat.

There are some good ideas/suggestions in this thread.

As Nina said, put the pill in a quarter piece of cheese and just give it to the pup. It has always worked for me. Mine start salivating when they hear the cheese being unwrapped and it is gone before they even get it in their mouth good.

You could serve the cheese up with a little wine as well.
I think dogs prefer red...

My DW is a vet tech and she just holds there mouth open tilts there head back and stuffs it down there throat, if they won't do the cheese. One of our dogs would do the cheese but the other wouldn't.

And Dottie continues to improve.

I'll just stick with peanut butter sandwiches. Watching her anticipate her treat is such fun!

Rather than cheese, I'd try wrapping it in a little habenaro pepper. Probably wouldn't work but some fun to watch.

Put the pill in a little ball of CREAM CHEESE. Works for our little Chihuahuas every time.
