I need a camping buddy!

What breed is good in an RV space, and the best breed camping dog?

We have a Pappilon that loves to camp. He knows when we are getting the camper ready to go and will not let us out of his sight. He is very good in te camper and a good neighbor in the campground. Loves the kids that stop by to see him.

Camping buddy------------

Any small camping buddy is good. Short haired is even better. My Daisy loves to travel and camping is her game. When she sees us load the RV for a trip, she become very excited. Loves the truck while riding.
Check your local Humane society for rescues. Make sure it is not one of the RV parks banned dogs.

English Setter. A pair would be perfect.

Any breed can be good. The amount of time you spend with the dog will determine how good they will be. My best buddy passed the winter before last, miss him, never took him camping. If he were here today, he would be camping.

IMHO, Please camp next to someone that has a dog and puts it in the camper and then leaves the site. Some dogs do, some don't, I have heard a dog barking for hours until it's buddy returns.

The DW thinks if she can speak in a consoling tone to the dog in the other camper it will relax.

Best of luck...

Quiet dogs are great. We love our Lab but tends to rock the 'boat' while we are sleeping. People and pet friendly dogs are must. Keep a copy of shot records on hand. We have been asked twice now for them. The first time we didn't have them, that was almost ugly. We were lucky enough to have a really good vet and CG manager was willing to accept verbal proof.

X2 on checking with the parks you plan to stay at for banned breeds. Ask carefully as some facilities count the mix in mixed breeds in their decision. We went to visit a friend two years ago with our boxer/am-bulldog mix and were not allowed to enter the campground.

I've camped with several breeds / mixes and all have done just fine after an introductory period. My Schipperkee's were the most protective and provided the best alarm system. My Bearded Collie wants to herd anything that moves...and play with all the kids.

Go to your local Rescue and see who picks you out... We have six Rescues at home now so we rotate which two go with us on any given trip.

X3 on making sure that the breed is not considered a bully breed and not allowed. Better also a breed that does not bark. Some campgrounds may have a size restriction...........

Having said that we like Boxers they don't bark much

Whoever calls your heart at the shelter and fits your lifestyle best. You should get a dog that is friendly with people and other dogs. Also get one that isn't a big barker or have separation anxiety. I have always had mutts. My previous dog was a lab Shepard cross, we listed her as a lab cross everywhere and had no issues. She was about 70 lbs and friendly. After Maddie passed we adopted a boxer/bulldog/beagle cross, he grew to be 65 lbs. He thinks he is everyone's best friend. I have to remind him not everyone likes dogs. I trained both of my dogs out of barking. Basically, you want a well mannered quiet (noise level) dog. Large or small is your choice. Research breeds to find one that matches your overall lifestyle, activity level and personality.

The first picture us of Maddie the lab shepherd. The other is Capone our boxer/american/bulldog mix

For many years we traveled with a bichon frishe ,later we had two! They are small, and will become very attached to thier owner. The best part is that they are hypo-allergenic and they do not shed! They do require monthly haircuts though! For the last 12 years though, my furbaby is a grey/white siberian huskey, and the wifes,a brown/white aussie.I have to admit,I love that dog like she was a person, well she is to me.The problem with both sibes and aussies is that they shed constantly. The aussie is fiercely loyal, the sibe not so much, but I think she is the most beautiful thing on 4 legs!

We travel with Cindy, an 11# Poodle. She is welcome in any pet friendly park, is quiet, does not shed, is small enough to easily pick up, loves people, and is a great traveler. She has been in 41 states and several Canadian Provinces. Can't leave home without her.

We have 3 rescues. One is my daughters beagle mix. We take our 2 with us. I suggest a trip or several trips to a shelter to find the pup that picks you. Our older boy turned 17 two months ago. He has always been great. Our younger boy was 2 when we rescued him from the gas chamber. Both are quiet but the younger one gets excited when a golf cart sneaks up on him. IMO mixed GENERALLY have fewer health problems and mid size live longer than large dogs. The only small dogs we have owned were a couple Yorkies and was glad to find other homes for them.

In our camping lives over the past 37 years or so, we've had 4 Bouvier des Flanders, 2 at the same time, 1 black lab we found in the bush of northern Michigan, she was spayed, obedience trained and hand signal trained for hunting. We also had our daughter's dog that we adopted when her marriage split. I'm looking at 1 of our grand daughter dogs right now, which is a Bouvier/lab mix. She camps also. The other grand daughter dog was a golden retriever/golden lab mix and she was a great camper also. We had a grandson dog which was a Coon Hound...not a good camper at all...... All of the dogs never spent a night out of the house and trailers. They were big but could curl into a pretty tight ball. At our age now, we don't have any more pets. Like was said before, it's how you train them, love them and are able to accept them into your lives and all that goes with that.

I agree with a short haired dog. We've camped with 2 German Shorthaired Pointers and now a Weimeraner and they have been great camping companions. Alot of campgrounds ban Rottweilers, Dobermans and Pitbulls because their insurance companies have tagged them aggressive breeds. I'm not in total agreement with this ban, but it's their rules. I think alot depends on the size on the camper too, a large breed takes up space in a popup.

I have two toy poodles that camp with us! When we leave them alone in the camper, we turn on the TV, to drown outside noises. This seems to help so they don't bark while we are away.

Just don't get a dog that barks all the time. Nothing is more hassle than listening to some yappy little mongrels all day and night.
